How Over-Reliance on Google Calendar Broke My Fire Mark: Fortune's Weave Playthrough

"Added to your calendar" meant something entirely different from what I had grown used to

"Added to your calendar" meant something completely different than what I'm used to

Cory's time in Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave is a fatal ordeal, causing me even more pain in a less-than-wonderful experience. Like many people with busy lives and social commitments, if it's not on the calendar, it doesn't exist for me. And even then, without multiple notifications dropping in to the designated time and alerting me "hey, you better clear a block of time for this important thing," things still get forgotten or forgotten. And the consequences of missing time-sensitive events in Fire Emblem are morale-killing.

Throughout the game there are events known as paralogues - side quests for specific characters. They're optional, but unlike the other main side quests, the paralogues provide a bit of extra story and world-building - pretty much what I'm enjoying about Fortune's Weave right now, so I don't want to miss them. The problem is that they are incredibly easy to lose. Paralogues are only available for a narrow window of time, so if you're out and about completing quests and exploring dungeons on the world map and don't take the time to enter the hub world (a significant amount of time!), you could miss them. And even when you enter the hub world, you can still f@%&*@! miss them

My first match with Paralog was Leda. I was excited to pick it up because it offers a heavy payday to complete and I generally enjoy Leda as a character. Accepting his paralogue informed me that he was ready to enter the game five days later, and the event was added to my calendar. Great, but while I was checking the world map for fishing and partying, and I was near the city so I could get back to it when it was time to ride with badass bitch Leda, I got a warning that the paralogue time had passed. And I missed it.

In Fortune's Weave, like other Fire Emblem games, there is a calendar that marks the birthdays of companions, shop sale days, and other important events. But there's a separate system that lets you mark a specific day with a notification so that when you're out in the field, you'll get a pop-up telling you that the day you've marked has arrived. So what the game meant by "add to my calendar" and what I thought it meant were two completely different things. From years of managing my personal and professional life with Google Calendar, I've been waiting for the notification. Meanwhile, the game was the equivalent of writing it on a sticky note and burying it under a pile of paper.

The only way to complete the paralogue after missing the deadline is to restart the chapter and discard everything you've done up to that point. I restarted the season, then turned off the switch, so disappointed I don't even want to look at the game right now.
