It's been a long time since I wanted to play 100%, but…

I've only played a bit of offroad hill driving sim but I'm already hooked. Or should I say: winched.

What does it take for a game to hook me? Over the Hill is a co-op (or single player!) off-road adventure that launched on Steam this week, and even playing a bit of it made me decide to play it not just more, but 100%. It's a feeling I haven't had about a game in a while.

Here's what my short trip to Over the Hill has already shown me:

To be honest, it's the last one that really got me to commit to it 100%. I was driving slowly down a bumpy road, stopping occasionally to winch my little Jeep up a hill, when suddenly I heard the familiar cawing of a crow. I zoomed out and finally saw the bird fluttering in the nearby trees. I went to camera mode and took a picture of him. good

But a moment later I saw a flash of something moving through the tall grass near my Jeep, and after about a minute of following it with my camera, it finally came into full view.

Iron Haven is the best "ship battle" game I've played in years, and it doesn't even have boats.

After over 400 hours of Walheim in Early Access, I love the journey from naked adventurer to godly Viking now more than ever.

And I'm having so much fun driving Over the Hill, I think I'll do it all: find every point of interest, unlock every vehicle and cosmetic, get every upgrade, and track every meteor.

(Yes, you can find meteorites hidden around the world by using a special piece of mounted gear, then plotting an off-road course to get to them, then hooking up your winch and freeing them. I've already found one. And I'll find the rest.)

And here's a bonus I didn't have on my top list: Over the Hill is confirmed on Steam Deck. As soon as I type this, I'm going to get on the couch this weekend and do some driving. Over the Hill is also 20% off on Steam until October 28th.

Chris started playing PC games in the 1980s, started writing about them in the early 2000s, and (finally) started getting paid to write about them in the late 2000s. After a few years as a casual freelancer, PC Gamer hired him in 2014, probably so he wouldn't email them asking for more work. Chris has a love-hate relationship with survival games and an unhealthy fascination with the inner lives of NPCs. He's also a fan of unexpected simulation games, mods, and skipping stories in RPGs in order to create his own story.
