Gears of War: E-Day servers appear to be experiencing problems because they are suffering from distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, meaning someone or some group has deliberately attempted to overload them.

The Gears of War: E-Day servers are apparently down because they're suffering from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks - so someone or some people have deliberately tried to overload them.

The Gears of War Community X account revealed this after a string of updates related to login issues. "Earlier today, some players experienced intermittent outages, login issues or other service disruptions in Gears of War: E-Day. These issues were due to distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks targeting our online services," the account said.

Our teams continue to monitor and mitigate this activity. We will provide updates if there are significant changes. Thank you for your patience and understanding."

"Service is back to normal for Gears of War: E-Day," the official Xbox account tweeted. Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve this issue." and shared a link to track support updates on the issue.

The login issues, which caused long wait times and led to server crashes - apparently making the game unplayable even if you wanted to play the campaign - were first mentioned yesterday. A few hours later, these were apparently resolved, although many comments to the contrary raised issues. They remained.

It's a bumpy start to what was otherwise a remarkable new entry in the Gears series, Dom said, with Dom awarding Gears of War: E-day four stars in his Eurogamer review - it's a game of contrasts. "Though there's still plenty of waist-high coverage, tidal fires, and brain-dead machismo, Gears E-Day proves that looking back can actually help you look forward, too," Dom writes.

This isn't the first time we've seen DDoS attacks affect the online portion of a game this year: In January, Arc Raiders and The Finals were hit by a "coordinated" DDoS attack. Around the same time, Final Fantasy 14 was seemingly the target of similar attacks. This is a constant problem in games that don't have any simple or easy resolutions.
