Katie Zacharias is leaving her job as White House press secretary after just five days in the role, a person familiar with the matter said. President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that he had told Zachariah to reconsider his role amid reports that he had fired him from the job.

"I told her honestly, if I were you, I would reconsider," Trump said outside the White House, adding: "Kathy, do you need this?

Trump said the decision was ultimately his and he would speak with Zakaria after his trip to Georgia. "I just want him to be happy," she said.

The president said Zakaria had been treated "very ugly" and "very unfairly" by the media since his former press secretary, Carolyn Leavitt, took over.

"I said you should reconsider this because you don't want to go over this," he said, referring to the backlash from the media that Zakaria received after his first press conference on Tuesday.
