Elysis

The approximately 70 million tons of aluminum produced annually account for about 3 percent of the world's industrial carbon dioxide emissions. Now in Quebec, aluminum giants Alcoa and Rio Tinto have opened the first commercial-scale carbon-free aluminum plant. The technology behind the investment, Elysis, replaces the carbon anodes commonly used in aluminum smelting with a proprietary material, eliminating direct greenhouse emissions from the process. "This has benefits not only for the environment, but also through more efficient aluminum production," says Elysis CEO Francois Pras. Look for Elysis-made aluminum in MacBook Pros and Apple iPhones, BMW and Audi cars, Corona beer cans and aerosol cans from Ball, Unilever and Alcoa.
