Burnham Must Answer: UK Prime Minister Drawn into City Case!
Andy Burnham faces demands for transparency about the full extent of his relationship with Manchester City.
According to "Varzeh Se", the Prime Minister gave in to pressure to publish the details of his meetings with the owners of the club following the public outrage over his defense of the Emirati owners. He announced that he had an important meeting with the president of Manchester City during his tenure as mayor of Greater Manchester. Burnham was mayor when Manchester City broke the Premier League's financial rules.
The prime minister also admitted that he had attended a number of Manchester City games, including the Vincent Kompany tribute game where he spoke informally to the club chairman in the stands.
Greater Manchester said in a statement: "In his capacity as mayor, he was a guest at Manchester City's home games on a small number of occasions, including the Vincent Kompany Tribute match in September 2019 where he met the chairman informally in the stands. These cases have been announced according to the usual procedure.
But Louis French, shadow sports secretary, said football fans deserved more explanation. He accused the prime minister of hiding behind executive officials and should take full responsibility.
"Very little information has been made available to us about these meetings, what was discussed and what may have been agreed upon," French said. If Burnham has nothing to hide, why has he remained so silent? His strange involvement in defending Manchester City's owners has caused serious concerns among fans. "It's time for the Prime Minister to come clean about his relationship with City Football Group so people can make up their own minds."
Manchester City was found guilty of breaching Premier League financial rules between 2009-18.
Burnham said last month that he would be very concerned if the club was sold by the Emirati owners after the ruling. He described them as a great partner in building modern Manchester. The Prime Minister's Office later tried to clarify the prime minister's comments, saying he took the ruling seriously and believed officials should face consequences if found guilty.
In an interview with the Rust Is Politics podcast, Burnham said he will make public everything he has done as mayor to work with club owners.
