'Cockroach Movement' in India: From Internet Joke to Political Protest
What matters about the uproar over cockroaches as a derogatory term, and the images of protesters' arrests, is not the phenomenon itself. The widespread growth of the movement shows that politicians must watch their words, since mass insults can at any moment turn into a shared language of protest and bring scattered demands into the spotlight.
Ambassador Arjan; Yalda Azarpi - India has returned to the top of the news again; This time with a wave of protests in response to the controversial statements of an Indian judge; An event that very quickly ignited street protests and became a platform for projecting deeper grievances. The movement known as the "People's Party of the Cockroach", which was formed in response to the insult to the unemployed youth, soon went beyond the reaction to a derogatory phrase and brought wider demands into the spotlight.
Widespread youth unemployment, numerous violations in entrance exams, mistrust of government institutions and concern about the integrity of elections are among the axes that have fueled the expansion of this movement and turned into public dissatisfaction. Public protests in the summer of 2026 resulted in the resignation of India's education minister and in October highlighted the demand for the resignation of the head of the election commission.
The widespread arrest of protesters in Delhi has once again raised the debate about the right to assembly, government accountability and the role of the young generation in Indian politics. However, it is not yet clear that this movement can go beyond street mobilization and become a sustainable force for reform.
The story started in May 2026; When "Surya Kant" (Judge of the Supreme Court of India) in a controversial statement, he compared the unemployed youth to cockroaches. A little later, he said that his words were misunderstood, but the phrase was widely reflected in social networks. Aphijit Deepke (strategic political communication expert and protesting student) wrote on X social network on May 16th: "What happens if cockroaches get together?" This question became the starting point of the movement that chose the name of the "Cockroach People's Party". Young people who felt humiliated turned the offensive word into a symbol of solidarity.
There was a political satire in the heart of this name; If the unemployed youth are insignificant from the point of view of those in power, their gathering can turn the image created to humiliate them into a challenge against the speakers. In the beginning, it was not planned to create a conventional political party with a nationwide organization, and headlines and hashtags were used to gather disaffected youth, but gradually one of the most important youth protest movements against Modi's government since the beginning of his prime ministership in 2014 took place.
A deep gap between education and opportunities
To understand the social context of this movement, one should pay attention to the expectations of the young generation of India. This country has had a significant economic growth in the past decades and its young population has a huge capacity for development, however, economic growth is not a guarantee of suitable, stable job opportunities and appropriate to the education of the workforce.
Entering the job market has become a fierce competition for many graduates. Families pay for their children's education and preparation for employment exams, but the result is often not academic satisfaction or a desirable job. The promise of progress through education is a crude fantasy, and the real experience of youth is failure and deprivation. It is clear that personal relationships, corruption and unfair privileges trump merit.
"Movement of cockroaches" expressed this dissatisfaction in a simple and publishable format. Its unusual name allowed people with similar experiences to see themselves as part of a larger group. However, this movement should not be considered representative of all Indian youth. The young society of this country is diverse in terms of region, class, language and economic conditions, and the priorities of urban students are not necessarily the same as the concerns of rural youth.
The exam crisis and the first political achievement
Dissatisfaction with the labor market is linked to a crisis of confidence in the educational system. Entrance exams for universities and popular fields, especially medicine, are of decisive importance for millions of Indian candidates. Students strive for academic and professional success for years, and families suffer a lot of financial and psychological costs. As a result, the disclosure of questions or the occurrence of violations in tests undermine the trust in educational justice and meritocracy.
Students protested against the disclosure of medical entrance exam questions in 2026. The protesters demanded the accountability of the responsible officials and the resignation of "Dharmendra Pradhan" (Minister of Education of India). Street protests, media pressure and the expansion of student support turned the crisis into a political issue. Pradhan resigned from his post in July and the cockroach movement recorded its first political achievement.
The resignation of this government official showed that social mobilization can have a significant political cost for government officials, but the resignation of a minister does not mean solving structural problems. Reforming the examination system requires independent supervision, transparent handling of complaints and mechanisms to prevent the repetition of violations. If the change of managers does not lead to the improvement of the procedures, the dissatisfaction will remain.
The focus of the protests changed in October and the Election Commission became the main target of criticism. Susk People's Party and student groups wanted the resignation of "Gyanesh Kumar" (Chairman of the Election Commission). The controversy was over a massive revision of the voter list; A process that started many discussions about the implementation method and its consequences for citizens' right to vote.
According to published reports, 130 million names were removed during the review of the lists. Election officials say that these changes were due to reasons such as death of people, relocation of residence or inability to verify relevant information. On the other hand, critics worry that administrative errors disenfranchise eligible citizens and that the consequences of disenfranchisement are not the same for vulnerable groups. Opponents of the government have warned about the possibility of political effects of this process; Claims to be separated from verified facts and official explanations.
In a democratic system, cleaning the voter list can be necessary to remove false information and prevent violations, but the legitimacy of this action depends on transparency, accuracy and the possibility of protest. A citizen whose name has been removed by mistake should be able to restore it without complicated obstacles. From this point of view, the issue is not simply the number of the excluded; It should be seen whether the review process has been properly implemented or not, and what guarantee is there to preserve the voting rights of qualified people?
Widespread arrests and restriction of protest
On the 10th and 11th of October, Delhi witnessed the widespread deployment of security forces and the arrest of protesters. The police tried to prevent the spread of protests by creating obstacles on the roads leading to the rally. The reports mentioned the restrictions on movement and the detention of journalists, activists and protesters.
Abhijit Deepke and two of the movement's leaders were arrested when they entered Delhi and the court ordered their release the next day. The police announced that they arrested more than two thousand people during the clashes on Saturday and released a large number of protesters very soon. Arrests were also reported in other cities, including Pune, in connection with protest rallies.
Where is the border between the protection of public order and the right to protest? The government is responsible for maintaining security and can establish regulations for holding gatherings, but this authority should not become a tool to eliminate peaceful protest. Proportion of police actions with criminal activity, access of detainees to lawyers and the possibility of journalists to work freely are among the important criteria for evaluating the performance of the government.
At the same time, for accurate judgment, the claims of the parties should be separated from the independent evidence. Officials have emphasized the need to maintain public order, while activists see security measures as limiting civil liberties. It should be seen whether the restrictions were necessary and proportionate, or whether there was a legal and effective possibility to express objection?
How did humor become a political tool?
One of the distinctive features of the cockroach movement is the use of humor and internet culture. Deepke's short message was able to attract the attention of the audience who might not be interested in the official statements of the parties. A pejorative term became a symbol of solidarity, and the publication of satirical content lowered the initial cost of participation for many users.
This method shows that political participation does not necessarily go through traditional parties. Social networks can turn fragmented experiences into public issues and give presence to groups whose voices are not heard.
But internet popularity is not the same as sustainable organization. The virality of an Internet message does not necessarily mean that the audience agrees on a political agenda or is ready for continued participation. In order to convert public attention to reforms, the social movement must have clear demands, a clear decision-making mechanism, and a way to hold leaders accountable.
Is the future of the movement revolutionary anger or reforms?
Expanding the range of protests from unemployment and education to election health shows that the cockroach movement has been able to connect different issues around the demand for accountability. However, these demands require different solutions. The reform of entrance exams depends on independent monitoring and transparent handling of violations; Reducing unemployment requires economic policies and creating job opportunities, and protecting the right to vote requires a verifiable electoral process and the possibility of effective protest.
The future of the cockroach movement depends on the relationship with the opposition parties of the government. The association of parties can increase the scope of protest, but if the movement loses its independence, it may be considered a tool for political competition. Maintaining the participation of various groups and avoiding complete dependence on several figures is also effective in the continuation of the path.
The importance of the chattering of cockroaches is not sarcastic and the images of arresting protesters; The spread of the movement shows that politicians should be careful with their language, because mass insults may become the common language of protest and bring scattered demands into the spotlight. It is still too early to judge the durability of the movement. Is the Susky movement able to transform initial anger and solidarity into practical proposals, sustainable organizing, concrete demands and measurable reforms?
