EXCLUSIVE: TikTok and startup Made By Us Studios have vertical video in mind and have hired digital and music superstars to help them out.
The two have partnered in a multi-year deal to create a series of creator-led microseries for TikTok and its app, PineDrama. Deadline has this news for you ahead of today's MIPCOM meeting, which will officially unveil the pact.
Meanwhile, The Knock is a genre miniseries created and directed by R.H. Paranormal Activity executive producer and Spooky Pictures' Weapons producer Stavis is producing in association with Moby's Little Walnut Productions. Watch on Deadline
Actor, filmmaker and digital comedy actor Adam Rose stars opposite Zariah Simone (Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin) in the series. Mobi has also composed the music for this series.
This is the latest example of how vertical video and microdrama fit into the video strategies of major social media services. Microdrama has been a hot topic at Cannes this week, as companies grapple with how to invest and resource their creative resources.
This comes after TikTok teamed up with Issa Rae's Hoorae to create the miniseries Screen Time, which has garnered nearly 580 million views worldwide, becoming the top show on the social platform and PineDrama.
"Micro-series are pioneering a new language of storytelling," said Dawn Young, global head of entertainment and micro-series at TikTok.
He added that Slate "centers creators, established producers and industry talent, to tell stories that were designed from the ground up for feed." This is an exciting step forward in our continued investment in the next generation of premium vertical storytelling on TikTok and PineDrama."
"Creators are already changing the way audiences discover talent, culture and entertainment," added Tanya Cohen, co-CEO of Made-by-Ma Studios. Vertical series are the next evolution of this relationship.
“The opportunity is not to make smaller versions of television, but to create a whole new storytelling language around the way audiences consume entertainment today. "TikTok understands this behavior on a global scale, and together we have the opportunity to build franchises with creators who already have built-in audience, community and cultural connection."
"For more than a decade, I've represented creators who want to develop premium IP and build a career in Hollywood," said Leanne Preiss, another Made-by-Ma studio executive. Now, as a studio, we can help realize these ambitions and work with them from the first idea to production. This partnership with TikTok opens up an exciting new avenue for creators to develop scripted stories, take on lead roles and help shape the projects they're a part of."
Made By Us Studios launched earlier this year as social marketing company Made By Us moves into digital production for the maker economy.
Meanwhile, TikTok has worked with the likes of Tubi on creator-led content initiatives this year.
