Clint Bentley, Greg Kwedar Name Julia Caruso Head of Production and Development at Ethos Banner (Exclusive)

Ethos, which is developing a roster of new filmmakers outside of festivals and labs, has struck a deal with Netflix.

Clint Bentley and Greg Kodar, makers of films such as Sing Sing and Train Dreams, have named Julia Caruso as head of production and development at their Ethos production banner.

Ethos, which has a deal with Netflix, is building a slate of emerging filmmakers emerging from top film festivals, film schools and labs. Ethos will use the financing and production model Bentley and Kodar used on their Oscar-nominated films Jockey and Sing Sing, where top and bottom talent are paid the same amount and have a stake in the film.

Netflix will finance the production and distribution of Ethos films.

A CalArts graduate, Caruso is a veteran independent producer with credits that include Columbus Kugonada and Andrew Ann's Spa Night, the latter of which earned him an Independent Spirit Award. Previously, he served as director of catalyst and industry at the Sundance Institute, a program that serves as the film financing arm of the institute, pairing filmmakers with potential investors.

“When I first met Clint and Greg, I was struck by the clarity of their vision for Ethos, as well as their renowned kindness and care that resonates in everything they do,” says Caruso. "Joining them at Ethos seems like a great next step for me as I can build on my recent work at Ethos, the Sundance Institute, where I supported emerging artists and piloted field interventions. I look forward to bringing that same spirit to this new role as we implement their vision for the Ethos model, support new voices, and make bold films."

"We are very excited to be working with Julia," added Bentley and Kodar. After an extensive search, we were blown away by his passion for supporting filmmakers as well as finding better ways to operate in our industry. Julia's experience as both a producer and visionary leader of the Sundance Institute's Catalyst Program has given her a unique balance of talent to help curate and nurture a portfolio of films that defy expectations and bring new and unique stories to the world. We can't wait for him to lead Ethos as we all strive to make films that engage the community of artists at every stage of the creation process.

In addition to Bentley and Kodar, Caruso also joins Rachel Bentley, who leads Ethos' business and operations. Bentley and Kwedar are currently starring in their new Netflix film, Saturn Return, directed by Kwedar and starring Charles Melton, Rachel Brosnahan and Will Poulter.
