It looks like the only gaming-focused Nvidia GPU left for us next year is the RTX 5070 Ti. And even then only at a very inflated price point. This is my personal take on the rumors of the GB202 GPUs switching to professional RTX Pro cards and the 24GB RTX 5080 coming to replace the 16GB version in early 2027.

This pretty much comes from a throwaway paragraph at the end of a post on Benchlife about the RTX 5090 saying goodbye to commercial production. According to this Taiwanese media outlet, add-in board/card partners (AIB or AIC) have been verbally informed that while they don't have anything concrete yet, a 24GB RTX 5080 will release their "product development information" soon.

So apparently the likes of Asus and MSI haven't been told much about the proposed new card, and so that means we're currently at a loss as to actual production. But given that 24GB of VRAM was previously suggested for the RTX 5080 Super, it's likely that those partners already have nearly all the information they need to ramp up production in time for a Q1 2027 launch.

But these are still nothing but rumors and the RTX Super/refresh series 50 has been rebooted more than once on a six-month-old Windows 11 machine trying to complete the update. So, I still can't guarantee that we'll see a silicon chip from a new GeForce GPU in 2027. Despite the leaked character, Moore's Law is dead and their sources claim that the RTX 6090 will be released in the first half of next year.

But, after 2026, I could see a GPU update of this type around or right after CES in 2027. It's not a big release, or even a gaming-based one, even though it's listed as a GeForce graphics card. This is because the GB203 chip inside the RTX 5080 is already fully used, so any new card won't have a higher core count and therefore won't offer any real improvements in gaming.

What benefits from having 24GB of fast VRAM are local AI models that well-heeled developers want to use. Those builders who don't want to go after all the GB202 GPUs for a variety of high-end professional cards are directed to them. If that's the case, those users will jump to the 24GB RTX 5080, where the RTX 5090 is once pulled off the shelves.

Benchlife seems to suggest that, like the RTX 5090, the standard 16GB RTX 5080 will also reach the end of its life. This means that the two top-of-the-line RTX Blackwell cards will effectively be tied for gamers, leaving only the RTX 5070 Ti with its $1,500 price tag as the best choice for gamers. Us PC peeps.

Nvidia gives and Nvidia takes. And then it takes again, I guess.
