Sony has unveiled three new portable audio players from the Walkman series, which are made with gold plating. These devices combine fashion and a sense of luxury with Sony's iconic Walkmans.

Sony's new Walkmans start at $1,899.99 for the NW-ZX900 and go up to $5,899 for the gold-plated NW-WM1ZM3. Between these two models is also the NW-WM1AM3 version priced at $2,999, which is almost identical to the WM1ZM3 in terms of specifications, except that it doesn't have the shiny gold body.

If the price of these devices isn't telling enough, all three models are clearly aimed at the professional audio quality enthusiast market. All three devices are equipped with Sony's DSD (Direct Stream Digital) reprocessing engine, which converts standard PCM audio into a DSD stream at 11.2 MHz. Sony claims this technology delivers sound more similar to analog audio. Also, gold plating is used on the back of all three devices, which aims to reduce interference and noise.

The two higher-end models, the Walkman NW-WM1ZM3 and NW-WM1AM3, are equipped with oxygen-free copper wiring with hand-soldered connections and upgraded power circuits to further reduce noise. A precision-machined OFC copper block separates digital circuits from analog circuits to minimize interference. The main difference of the WM1ZM3 model is that its entire body is made of oxygen-free copper and then plated with gold.

This is not the first time that Sony has spent so much money and effort to make a golden music player. In fact, you can buy the previous model of this device, the NW-WM1ZM2, right now for a discounted price of $2599. Of course, buying a used iPod from eBay is probably still the more affordable option.
