Google unveiled the Fitbit Edge health and fitness tracker. This product comes with an OLED display that is about 46% larger than the Fitbit Charge 6, a heart rate sensor and the ability to detect irregular heartbeats, and it can be charged for up to seven days with each charge. Its base price is $179.99 and its pre-sale started on October 12. Fitbit Edge is scheduled for public release on October 27.
Fitbit Edge sits in Google's portfolio of wearable products between Fitbit Air, the company's display-free wristband, and the Pixel Watch 5 smartwatch. This product is designed for users who need health and fitness monitoring capabilities, but don't want all the features of a smart watch.
The Fitbit Edge's OLED display is about 46% larger than the Charge 6 display and provides information such as the time, number of steps, and calories burned. The screen of the device is covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass.
The body of the device is made of aluminum and its thickness reaches 11.5 mm. Google has also placed a physical button on the side edge, which replaces the capacitive touch button on the Charge 6. The Fitbit Edge battery lasts up to seven days on a single charge. Of course, activating the always-on display reduces this period to about two days. It takes about 90 minutes to fully charge the device, and according to Google, five minutes of charging is enough to provide the energy needed for a day.
This bracelet uses a replaceable battery and uses the same exclusive Fitbit Air charger. Fitbit Edge is IP68 certified against dust and with water resistance up to 5 atmospheres (5ATM), it is also suitable for swimming.
Fitbit Edge is equipped with an electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor, an optical heart rate sensor, a skin temperature sensor, and a blood oxygen sensor (SpO2). This set allows monitoring indicators such as heart rate, heart rate variability, heart rate at rest and skin temperature. The device is also capable of recording ECG to detect signs of atrial fibrillation, a type of heart rhythm disorder.
Google has also improved the automatic tracking of sports activities in this product. The new activity detection model estimates the type of activity using movement data, location and user behavior patterns. For example, if a user goes to a tennis court, the device can recognize the activity recorded at that location as tennis. Also, if a person regularly does yoga at a certain time, this pattern can help automatically identify the activity.
The Fitbit Edge also has built-in GPS, and according to Google, its location tracking accuracy is about 40% higher than the Charge 6. This improvement is mainly related to the hardware and processing changes of the device itself.
The Fitbit Edge uses a redesigned version of the Fitbit operating system and, unlike the Pixel Watch, is not equipped with the Wear OS operating system. However, its user interface is inspired by the tile-based design of the Pixel Watch.
Fitbit Edge comes in four colors. These colors are compatible with Pixel 11 phones. The price of the standard version of the device is $179.99, and buyers will receive a three-month subscription to Google Health Premium. The Stephen Curry Special Edition is also available for $219.99.
Google has also considered several separate bands for this bracelet. The price of the Sport Active strap is $39.99, the magnetic strap is $59.99, and the metal strap is $149.99. The Performance Loop strap will also be available for $49.99.
