Ambassador Arjan-International Group: According to the updated Multidimensional Global Poverty Index 2026 published by the United Nations Development Program and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative at the University of Oxford, this number is 51.5 million more than the previous report.

Data shows that more than half of these people, specifically 617 million, are children, 83% of whom live in rural areas.

Meanwhile, the United Nations noted that many countries are still making significant progress. Out of 89 countries in this ranking, 30 countries have managed to reduce their poverty rate by half in less than 15 years.

Particularly positive trends were observed in Egypt, Nepal, Vietnam and China, which recorded the highest poverty reduction rates.

The United Nations explained that the increase in the number of people living in poverty is partly due to population growth. "In Angola and Zambia, the proportion of the population living in poverty has declined, but the rate of population growth has outpaced the rate of decline in poverty, resulting in an increase in the overall number of people living in poverty," the report said.
