Sony Explores Unconventional Release and Box Office Strategies for Its Beatles Biopic Films

Sony Pictures is exploring several different release strategies for director Sam Mendes' The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, from releasing all four films on a single day in April 2028 to pooling box office earnings across all four, so that no one Beatle can be seen as more successful than the others.

Sony Pictures is considering several different release strategies for Beatles director Sam Mendes - a four-film event, from releasing all four films on the same day in April 2028 to combining the box office of all four films together so that no one Beatles film can be considered more successful than the other.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's sources, the studio and Mendes "have long considered dropping all four films on the same day. In addition, Mendes and the studio are considering a very unique reporting structure for the films' box office earnings. Instead of releasing statistics for each film individually, the studio is considering aggregating the returns of all four films together."

Sony might also offer moviegoers a four-pack of tickets for the entire quartet, but that would require theater chains to figure out exactly how to sell that to moviegoers.

THR adds: "Assuming that all four films are indeed released in the same week, sources also say that the plan is to market the films in a specific order — that there will be no 'correct' order in which to watch the films."

The Beatles - a cinematic event of four films

What Sony hopes to avoid is a scenario where audiences favor one member of the Fab Four over another, where perhaps most moviegoers go to see a John Lennon or Paul McCartney movie and wait for streaming to watch a George Harrison or Ringo Starr movie.

Pippa Harris, one of the film's producers, recently spoke at the BFI London Film Festival industry forum where she said that filmmakers and studios "want people to be able to experience them in the cinema at the same time... Now that doesn't necessarily mean we think people are going to go and see all four films in one day. But in the same month, you might see one film a week, or you might see another film at the weekend."

The cast of the film includes: Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Paul Mescall as Paul McCartney, Joseph Quinn as George Harrison and Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr.

Saoirse Ronan as Linda McCartney, Anna Savoy as Yoko Ono, Amy Lou Wood as Patty Boyd, Mia McKenna-Bruce as Maureen Starkey, David Morrissey as Paul McCartney's father, Jim McCartney, Leanne Best as John Lenami, Manager James Britton A. Lloyd stars as music producer George Martin, Bobby Schofield as road manager and Neil Aspinall, Daniel Hoffman-Gill as wanderer Mal Evans, Arthur Darvill as press officer Derek Taylor and Adam Palley as music director Alan Klein.
