Iran's Para Asian Games Ascent: From Fourth Place to Runner-Up
Iran's contingent at the Para Asian Games has been on an upward trend, finishing fourth twice before reaching third and then second place. This trajectory raises expectations for the country's representatives at the fifth edition of the Games.
According to Mehr reporter, the Asian Para Games started in 2010 as the biggest multi-discipline event for athletes with disabilities in the Asian continent. Iran was one of the countries present in these games from the very first period and happened to be among the medal contenders.
Examining the results of the last 4 rounds of the Para-Asian Games shows that the Iranian team has been able to gradually improve its position in the ranking of countries and become one of the main powers of Para-Asian sports in Asia.
The first edition of these games was held in Guangzhou, China in 2010, the Iranian delegation to that edition of the Games was in fourth place with a total of 80 medals, including 27 gold, 24 silver and 29 bronze medals. Four years later, in the 2014 Games in Incheon, South Korea, Iran's caravan managed to win 37 gold, 52 silver and 31 bronze medals with a better performance, and once again ranked fourth with a total of 120 medals.
The third edition of the Asian Para Games was hosted by Jakarta in 2018. That edition of the Games was considered a turning point in Iran's medal winning process, because the representatives of the Paralympic sports in Jakarta stood in the third place with a total of 136 medals, including 51 gold, 43 silver and 42 bronze medals. The increase in the number of gold medals and the rise of one step in the table showed the progress of the performance of the Iranian caravan in that period of the Games.
The fourth edition of the Para Asian Games, known as the Hangzhou 2022 Para Asian Games, was held one year late in 2023 due to the Corona epidemic. In that period, Iran's convoy won 44 gold, 46 silver, and 41 bronze medals, and a total of 131 medals, and won the second place in Asia, and after China, it was announced as the runner-up of the Para-Asian Games for the first time.
A look at the results of the last 4 rounds of the Para-Asian Games shows that Iran has won a total of 467 medals, including 159 gold, 165 silver and 143 bronze. Of course, the number of medals alone is not a complete measure of performance, and the final position of the countries also depends on the results of the competitors and the number of disciplines and materials held.
Now, on the eve of the fifth Para-Asian Games, Aichi-Nagoya, the history of Iran's presence and performance in these games and promotion to the position of runner-up has increased the expectations of our country's caravan. Maintaining this position or improving it will require the successful performance of athletes in various fields and competition with the main powers of Para Asian sports in the continent.
However, beyond the final rank and the number of medals, the continuation of the development process of Paralympic sports, supporting new talents and providing the basis for the sustainable success of athletes are among the most important achievements that should be considered along with the results of each period.
The fifth edition of the Para-Asian Games will be held from October 26 to November 2.
