The hot defeat of the competition of Robbie J.K. is backing its upcoming comedy series Meatballs to deepen the recent love of Canadian content.
In an interview today at MIPCOM Cannes alongside Meatballs co-star Maddie Phillips, G.K. He praised the likes of StreamerCrow for launching risk-taking apps.
"It's a big swing, and as we've seen from Crews and others, big swings are worth taking," he said of Meatballs, the new version of Ivan Reitman's Bill Murray-starring comedy.
Deadline asked JK, who plays Dale and Phillips in Meatballs , which is billed as a "cheesy and irreverent take on the popular Canadian comedy classic from 1979," if a sex-themed comedy worked for today's audience after an era of mostly cheesy comedies. "It's a pendulum for sure," said G.K. The pendulum swung one way and now it has swung the other way. There will be something for everyone to resonate with because all the characters are so different, and the joke gun is always pointed at different characters, so you're going to have to weed out what you find funny. People are ready for this."
Phillips, who plays lead character Skipper, described the shoot as "feeling like a bunch of theater kids in an improv class going and doing whatever they want."
The Gen V actor said he didn't draw camp main character Murray Tripper. "Bill Murray is like an icon," he added. "He's his thing and I'm mine, and you better be yourself. I didn't even try to even come close to being Bill Murray."
"The ways they're similar is a combination of not caring, but really caring. It was all in the script for me."
Meatballs stars the pair as counselors who make bad decisions at a failed summer camp. “With a little hard work and a lot of good vibes, [camp] still has the potential to be the best place on earth for 200 lucky kids,” the synopsis reads. "Or more importantly, it's the perfect place to pitch a tent for consultants who call it a home away from home."
Canadian companies Blink49 Studios and Incendo are making Meatballs, which features Meatballs Mollie Guest, Jordan Kronis, Molly Lewis, Krista Nazaire, Markus McNamara and Lachlan Quarmby, along with guest stars Park, Ash and Mae Martin. Jeff Detsky and Wendy Leitner are the hosts, and Sphere Abacus, the distribution company owned by Crave's parent company Bell Media, is selling the Meatballs here at Cannes.
The series was launched after the huge success of the ice hockey drama Crave and HBO's Heated Rivalry, which starred Hudson Williams, Connor Story, J.K. and Sophie Nellis G.K. He noted the current buzz around stories coming out of Canada, with other shows such as Netflix's North of the North and Williams' upcoming series Yaga creating buzz in recent months.
"There have been some important films, productions and generations that have paved the way, and maybe I'm aware of it because of the success of Heated Rivalry and seeing it on an international scale, but I think people are looking for new flavors and places to fall in love," says G.K. Canada really can deliver on all fronts and continues to prove it.
I think Meatballs plays with Canadian flair and charm. Canadians will recognize the small bits that are Canadian, but it will definitely resonate and appeal to an international audience that might have a taste of the hot competition or something and want to know what's going on – rather than ginger juice. I am very lucky to be a part of this wave."
