NASA's Picture of the Day: Moon, Jupiter and Its Moons in One Frame

NASA's image for today offers a striking view of the crescent Moon, with Jupiter and its moons all in one frame.

In NASA's image of the day, we see a beautiful frame of the crescent moon with the glow of Jupiter and its moons. In fact, in this image, we see five moons, including four moons of Jupiter and the only moon of Earth.

According to ambassador Arjan, recording this image from several moons became possible because the Earth's moon passed directly in front of Jupiter last week.

This featured image is a series of closely aligned exposures taken from Westchester, New York in the United States.

Earth's sunlit crescent moon, lower left, is overexposed, while the moon's night side, upper right, is slightly overexposed due to light reflecting off Earth.

Jupiter's bright Galilean moons lie almost vertically above the Moon, from bottom to top in a triad of Ganymede, Io, Callisto, and Europa.

Callisto, Ganymede, and Io are larger than Earth's moon, while Europa is only slightly smaller.

NASA's robotic spacecraft, known as Juno, is currently orbiting Jupiter and has so far passed close to three of these moons.
