With the Friday the 13th prequel to Crystal Lake, longtime fans are treated to a story for the mother of all slashers.

Linda Cardellini, who plays Jason Voorhees' grieving mother, Pam, in Brad Caleb Kane's Peacock, which is available now, explained to Deadline that she used the character's grief as "fuel for her rage," which ultimately drives her to commit murder months after her son, Jason.

"It's an interesting line that I walk as Pam because there's a part of her that doesn't believe she's completely gone, so there's a real sadness and a real longing that happens, but there's also a real hope hidden in it that she might still be out there somewhere," he explained. "So it's really fun to play, because sometimes it can be complete sadness, and sometimes it can be pain, and sometimes it can be sadness masked with a little bit of hope for someone who might be around the corner. And I think that sadness changes when she starts to move on." Watch on Deadline

"But I think the real sadness is how people have treated her, because when we first meet her, she's so sweet and vulnerable and so loved," Cardellini continued. It's terrifying for her to watch the world treat her so badly, and the idea continues to spiral out of control to the point where she fears her the most. And I think that anger is relatable. I think it surpasses him. "I think it's going to take a lot of anger out of him to finally let it go, and it's going to feel a little good for him, so there's a switch that turns on after that."

A few years before the events of Friday the 13th (1980), the prequel series gives Pam her first taste of blood as a pair of mysterious men poke around about her past. He uses a familiar weapon to get rid of them.

"The first one with the machete, I'm having fun. It was great," Cardellini said.

While grieving the loss of her son, Pam takes a motherly interest in Jason's friend Grace (Gwendolyn Sundstrom), who discovers she has a neglectful mother. As Pam confronts Grace's mother at the fast food restaurant where she works, she puts the dispute aside.

"When I have a sledgehammer in a fast-food restaurant, there are tantrums," Cardellini recalls. “And that intense anger, before that murder actually happened, somewhere I thought something had to come out of him. So, that was fun for me."

Airing on the Peacock, Crystal Lake stars Cardellini as Pam Voorhees, who struggles to grieve after her son Jason drowned the previous summer. When two strangers begin digging into her mysterious past, Pam does her best to keep her secrets buried and find her son, who she's convinced is still alive after his body never existed.
