Iranian Director's Film Enters Oscar Race
Majid Majidi's film 'Midday Meal' has qualified for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2027 Oscars after winning the Best Film award at the Busan International Film Festival.
After winning the Best Film Award of the Busan Film Festival, the film "Ghazai Nimroz" by Majid Majidi was recognized as eligible to compete in the Best International Film category of the 2027 Oscar Awards.
According to Ambassador Arjan, in the past, each country introduced only one film to the Academy through official institutions or selected committees. Although this process gave a certain order to the selection process, it was always accompanied by criticism; Among other things, the choices were sometimes influenced by political, cultural considerations or limited tastes, and many prominent works were left out of the competition cycle.
Now, with a rule change that will come into effect from the 2027 Oscars, non-English-language films can also qualify through prestigious festivals. Cannes Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and Busan Film Festival are new ways to enter this competition. Winning the main prize for the best film in these festivals, if it is a non-English language film, can be a new way to be on the path to the international Oscar.
Based on this, Majidi's new film entitled "Midday Food" will enter the Oscar competition in the best international film category after winning the main award for the best film at the Busan Festival.
