SPOILER ALERT: This post contains details about Law & Order Season 26, Episode 2, which aired Thursday, October 15 on NBC.
Earlier this year, Deadline reported that Reid Scott, who plays Senior Detective Vincent Riley, was leaving the NBC procedural.
Scott's exit finally aired in the second episode of Season 26, "Into the Mystic".
The episode opens with Riley sitting at her desk and something prompts her to look for Ray Beeler. When he arrives at Ray's apartment, the person who answers the door says that Ray is not there. Riley instructs the boy to call Ray to find out where he is. Moments later, Riley calls Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy), telling him, "I need to talk to you right away. Call me." Watch on Deadline
Riley then calls Theo Walker (David Ajala) and tells him she's going to a bar because "something's cooking." After going to the bar, Riley gets a text from Walker saying he's on his way.
As Riley approaches the bar, she notices Ray leaving. Riley goes after Ray, who tells him he needs to talk. However, when he turns around, he shoots Riley twice in the chest and runs away.
Walker arrives on the scene and notices a man running away with a gun in hand. However, there is a lot of commotion at the bar as Riley is bleeding from gunshot wounds.
Walker is calling for help, pushing and screaming, "Vince, stay with me, come on!"
Lt. Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney) arrives at the hospital and Walker fills her in on what happened, leaving her shocked and speechless.
At the hospital, the doctor tells Walker that they couldn't save Riley, leaving all his colleagues disappointed.
Robert Calvino, played by James Badge Dale, is brought in to help investigate Riley's death.
Riley's wife shows up at the police station and tells them that she recently withdrew "a lot of cash". Although Riley's wife did not know what the money was for, she found out that he was an alcoholic.
Jessica Brady and Robert Calvino visit the woman Riley had argued with hours earlier on the day she died. The pregnant woman tells officers that Riley gave her cash because she "felt guilty" about killing her husband years ago.
Brady and Calvino discover that Riley was at Ray Beeler's apartment and talk to his friend, who confirms what Riley was doing there the night she was killed. When they return to the office, Nolan tells them that Ray Beeler's brother, Wayne, who he found for murder, has been killed in prison.
The police find Ray Beeler, who was attending his brother Wayne's funeral, and arrest him as the prime suspect in Riley's death.
Actor Ryan Eggold stars as Matt Riley, the troubled brother of Detective Vincent Riley, who appears in court and demands justice for his brother.
It runs into trouble when Ray Beeler's defense argues that they can't prove he's the one who killed Riley because they didn't find a gun.
Die Nicholas Baxter (Tony Goldwyn) is determined to put Walker on the stand, but Nolan backs off because he doesn't believe Walker really wants Ray Beeler to be the man who killed Riley.
On sentencing day, Ray Beeler was found guilty of first degree murder.
Although it was a victory for the prosecution, there are doubts that Walker was telling the truth, and Nolan still has doubts about whether they did the right thing.
In July, Deadline first reported that Reed Scott was leaving Law & Order after joining Season 23. She reportedly decided to leave NBC due to the strain of commuting cross-country to New York City, where the series is filmed.
