Participating in a culture war repeatedly requires ignoring all historical context for getting angry about women and minorities, and the latest example is the Avatar larpers who are following it days after the new animated film Seven Havens premiered on Paramount Plus. Set more than 200 years after the legend of Korra, the show not only stars a young amputee named Pavy as one of the new avatars, but also features a same-sex couple in Jae's girlfriend and Dato's boyfriend. Anyone who really cares about the franchise knows that Avatar has always featured characters with disabilities like Toph, there are literally no white people in it because it's world is based on Asian and Native cultures, and it featured a conventional bisexual woman as its protagonist in The Legend of Korra. At least one Avatar cast member gets involved with these guys and can't stand their bigotry or disregard for the show's history.

Greg Baldwin, who voiced Zuko's uncle Iroh from 2007 to 2014 after lead actor Mako's death, got the job when some outrage baiters claimed that Seven Havens shouldn't have queer or disabled characters because it's "supposed to be a kid's show"? It's not like people haven't been watching the show for decades, and the core fans are definitely old enough to drink it, but turn off. Baldwin scoffed at the reaction, saying that being reminded that queer and disabled people exist must be "hurtful" for someone committed to an alternate reality. Topher Ngo, who voices Datu in Seven Havens, thanked him for his support. When someone else responded that "Lgbtq f*ggotry has no place on a children's show," Baldwin briefly responded with a picture of Iroh giving the camera a giant middle finger.

Iroh was last played by Art Butler, who appeared in the 2023 video game Quest For Balance. In recent years, the show's voice talent has been retooled to reflect more of the franchise's Asian inspirations, but it's good to see Baldwin willing to help weed out the bigots who pretend to care about a show, now that they know there are social media points to be made by feigning outrage about gays on TV.

Overall, the reaction to Jae and Dato's relationship has been positive so far. They're super cute together in the screen time they get, though previous Avatar stories have prepared fans for some kind of twist in the road that could jeopardize their relationship.
