Megatron returns in Transformers #38, scheduled for release in late 2026, with the new identity of Megatronus Rex and a heavily armed design.
Three years after the beginning of the Energon universe, the Transformers comic series is on the verge of one of its biggest changes. Megatron is going to return with a completely new look under the title Megatronus Rex; A development that could change the power equation between the Decepticons and the Autobots forever.
It's hard to believe that it's been three years since the beginning of the Energon universe from Image Comics and Skybound. The series began with the first issue of the Void Rivals comic; where Jetfire, one of the Autobots, revealed his identity to two aliens named Darak and Solilla. Even though these two characters were caught in a difficult situation, Jetfire left them; Because he had more important duties. The Autobots were at war with the Decepticons on Cybertron, and Jetfire was millions of years away.
However, Void Rivals was just the beginning. After that, the world of Energon expanded gradually and with careful planning, and four mini-series centered on Cobra Commander, Duke, Scarlet and Destro were released. These works were related to each other and the characters of G.I. Joe was also brought into this world. While the comic book audience was getting to know these characters, the Transformers series showed that the war between the Autobots and the Decepticons was also extended to Earth.
In 2026, the lives of the leaders of both the Autobots and the Decepticons have changed. Optimus Prime handed over leadership of the Matrix to Elite-1 and became Elite Prime. As a result, Optimus is now weaker than before and has lost his confidence. This happens as the balance of power in the world of Energon will change soon, according to new information released at the New York Comic Con event.
Megatron arrives with a new look
In Transformers #31, Megatron was trapped in a crystal cocoon where he confronted Megatronus. He finally gave in to Megatronus and knelt before him. Some time later, in issue 36, the crystal began to crack; An event that showed that the leader of the Decepticons would no longer be the same person after exiting it. At the time, it was questioned whether Megatron would transform into Galvatron, take on the identity of Megatronus, or eventually just come back with more power; What could have been disappointing for the audience. However, none of these possibilities appear to be true.
A comic series needs bold changes to stand out. Creators must keep the interest of the audience by creating new developments. Of course, as many fans will remember from Marvel's Ultimatum comic event, shocking audiences just for the sake of excitement can backfire and alienate them.
Fortunately, Image Comics and Skybound aren't content with just a controversial change and have apparently decided to create a new identity for the character. Megatron will transform into Megatronus Rex in Transformers #38, which will be released in November 2026. However, the introduction of his new form is only part of the story, and now fans want to know what this development will mean for the future of the story.
How will Megatronus Rex affect the world of Energon?
The first question about Megatron's new form is related to his new powers and weapons. In the design, part of the appearance of this character resembles a tank. Megatron has used similar abilities before, but it's unclear how much more firepower he'll have this time around. He appears to be equipped with missile launchers on his shoulders and has a huge cannon on his arm. This design presents an image of a destructive force and it is possible that more weapons will be considered for him in the future. Perhaps what we have seen so far is only a fraction of the abilities of the new version of Megatron.
Another question is, will Megatronus Rex become a more ruthless leader than before? Considering Megatron's history, such a change is not difficult to imagine. One of the reasons for his transformation into a more powerful, violent and dangerous creature is the defeats that his forces have suffered; Among the events we saw in #29 of the Transformers comic. Megatron is not one to forgive defeat easily, and this trait is unlikely to change in his new identity. As a result, his subordinates may face a deadly punishment or have to adapt to new conditions.
If one of the Dysceptics is to fall victim to the wrath of the new leader, it is likely that this fate will befall Soundview. Despite his unquestioning loyalty to Megatron, he can become an example for others to learn from. Destroying a character who is willing to follow his leader to fiery hell will have a more severe consequence than punishing other forces.
Killing Soundview could help Megatronus Rex show the other Dysceptics what the consequences are of losing to him. However, such a decision may end up being detrimental to the new leader; Because removing one of his most loyal forces can have unexpected consequences. On the other hand, one of the Decepticons named Thundercracker has already joined the Autobots. If Megatron's other forces witness his brutal treatment of one of his most loyal soldiers, the fear of death will likely drive them to the Autobots as well.
This could make things more complicated for Megatronus Rex; Especially since Optimus Prime is now weaker than ever and needs all the help he can get to deal with the new threat. Therefore, Megatron's transformation is not limited to increasing his power and may affect the future of the entire Energon universe.
