Billy Joel says he can't drive, unsure of tour future after diagnosis of brain disorder
Billy Joel has revealed that his hydrocephalus diagnosis means that every concert is like a concussion and he is not allowed to drive a vehicle.
Billy Joel's motorcycle collection auction has a "mix of everything."
Billy Joel's tour future is uncertain due to his health issues.
Joel, 77, revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he won't even be allowed to drive a vehicle after being diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) in 2025.
"What the neurologist told me is, every time you do a program, it's like getting a concussion," Joel said.

When asked about his current condition, Joel said that he is "in good health" but is still unsure when he will be able to tour again.
"I have this disease called hydrocephalus," he told the publication. "It used to be called water on the brain, so it affects your balance, your memory, your vision and your hearing. But I'm fine."
They call it a brain disorder, but it's not that serious. It's just something that affects your balance the most.

Joel admitted that he can't perform like he used to.
"I'll have to do a bunch of tests before I know, but right now I can't drive," he said. "I'm not allowed to drive. And I can't perform, because what the neurologist told me, every time you do a show, it's like you get a concussion."
"So they have to test me more to see if I can come back and do it again, which I would love to be able to do," he added.
The "Uptown Girl" singer underwent brain surgery in May 2025 after her normal pressure hydrocephalus diagnosis was revealed. According to a statement Joel posted on social media at the time, NPH affected his vision, hearing and balance.
During a recent appearance on his SiriusXM show, "The Billy Joel Channel," he delved further into his recovery process, saying that doctors have told him that playing rock 'n' roll music at high volume caused nerve damage to his brain.
Joel recalled his medical team saying, "Well, we're going to drill a hole in your skull and stick a shunt inside your brain."
"I didn't want to do it, but then I read it and realized it can help improve your balance and help your memory," he noted. You know, I don't want to lose my marbles. Age and conditions are hard to tell, so I agreed to do the shunt and did the surgery. "And they put a shunt in my brain and it actually improved."
"My memory has improved. My balance improved a little. My ability to perform was better and I noticed and the doctors told me because of my job playing loud rock and roll music that every time I did a show I would give something like a concussion.
Joel shared more about his diagnosis ahead of the sale of more than 70 items from his personal motorcycle collection, which is headed to auction block next month with Gooding Christie's.

"Well, I ended up owning over a hundred motorcycles, and the truth is, you can only ride one at a time. I'm in my 70s now, and I find that I can't ride as much as I used to," he told the publication. "I don't want to die like a bug on the windshield. So I thought I'd auction off a bunch of them."

"And I also have hydrocephalus, which makes driving a bit scary. So I figured it was time to pass it on to someone else."
The collection includes some of his most popular motorcycles, in addition to Ducati, BMW, Moto Guzzi, Harley-Davidson, Yamaha, Triumph, Honda, Kawasaki, and more.
One of the most interesting motorcycles in the collection is a 1978 Triumph T140 Bonneville that was gifted to Mr. Joel by Madison Square Garden on the occasion of his 150th sold out show at the world famous venue. (Mike Maze, Gooding & Co., LLC.)
"He still holds the record for the best-selling show at Madison Square Garden. And this bike has a keyboard painted on the tank. It's a really special, special item."
The motorcycles in the auction - scheduled for November 20-21 - will be on display at the Javits Center in New York.
