The hidden car handle is facing strict new standards from China's regulatory agency, which could stop production of the products, due to safety warnings and risks of power outages in accidents.

The Chinese government has drafted new regulations that will restrict the use of all-electric, concealed door handles from January 1, 2027 due to safety concerns. According to this directive, all cars must have the ability to mechanically open the doors even when the electricity is completely cut off.

China's new regulations to remove hidden car handles

According to the new rules, from January 1, 2027, any new design approval will require detailed technical documentation. Power handles that depend on electrical power for release are completely prohibited, and only semi-concealed models with a mechanical lever and a minimum access space of 2.4 x 0.8 inches are permitted. In addition, physical controls for wipers, lights and defogger should also be replaced with touch menus.

The deadline for technical evaluation and stopping the production line of unsafe cars

Automakers whose products have already been approved have until July 1, 2027 to register 51 new technical parameters, including software durability, resistance to water penetration and a 30,000 km (18,600 mile) road test. Failure to provide these documents or the presence of safety defects will cause the immediate stop of the production line and the official recall of cars in the Chinese market.
