According to ICT News; In its new beta version for macOS (version 13.0 build 283318), Telegram has introduced a new feature called "News" that has a function similar to the Explore section on Instagram. This feature was discovered on October 14 and 15, 2026 (22 and 23 Mehr 1405) in the code of the beta version of this messenger. According to reports, Telegram has been working on developing this feature for several years.

The "News" section is divided into two separate tabs:

Added tab: Displays all the posts of the channels in which the user is a member in chronological order in a single list. Users can manually add or remove their desired channels to this section. This feature allows users to read their desired content continuously without having to refer to each channel separately.

For You Tab: Algorithmically collects and displays posts related to the user's interests from different channels. Users can manually add their favorite topics to this section and choose a specific name and emoji for each category.

In this section, other features are also foreseen: link, search, new notifications, mark as read, preload media files, avatars and stories for faster content browsing.

It is noteworthy that Telegram has been working on the development of this feature for eight years. The first signs of this feature appeared in a macOS beta in January 2018, but it was quickly disabled on the server side. In April 2022, a commit was discovered in the official Telegram repository for iOS, which confirmed that this feature was in development, but never reached the release stage.

Telegram has not yet officially introduced this feature. This feature has only been discovered in the code of the beta version of macOS, and it is not clear whether it will be released in the final version or not. The exact time of public release of this feature and its availability on other platforms such as iOS, Android and Windows have not been announced yet.

It is also unclear how Telegram selects the content of the "For You" tab and whether channels to which the user is not a member can also be displayed in this section.

The introduction of the "News" feature in Telegram is considered an important strategic change in the approach of this messenger. Until now, Telegram was mainly known as a channel-centric messaging platform where users followed the content of channels by visiting each channel directly. But now, by offering a unified feed, it's moving toward the "content discovery" model previously championed by Instagram and TikTok.

The smart thing in designing this feature is to provide two separate tabs. The Added tab allows users to have full control over the content they receive, and the For You tab helps them discover new content related to their interests. This combination strikes a balance between user control and content discovery.

However, this capability can also bring challenges. Algorithmicization of the Telegram feed can lead to a decrease in the visibility of smaller channels, since the algorithm is likely to prioritize the content of more popular channels. Also, there are concerns about privacy and how Telegram uses user data to personalize the feed.

Finally, this feature can transform Telegram from a mere messenger to a content discovery platform and intensify the competition with Instagram and TikTok. But its success depends on how the algorithm is implemented and the level of user acceptance.
