Anthropic Warns: AI Could Soon Replicate Itself onto Smart Home Gadgets
Anthropic researchers say small AI models could soon begin self-replicating without human intervention by infiltrating internet-connected household devices.
Anthropic researchers say that small models of artificial intelligence can start their reproduction process by infiltrating household devices connected to the Internet, without human intervention.

Anthropic has announced that small artificial intelligence models are just months away from achieving the ability to automatically replicate on commercial Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as smart ovens and stoves and various Android TV sets.
In these researches, Anthropic investigated whether artificial intelligence models can identify vulnerable devices, copy a copy of themselves inside them and continue to spread without human intervention or not. The results show that small models with a volume of less than 30 billion parameters can complete many steps necessary for reproduction; However, these models have faced a challenge in the continuous and complete implementation of all stages from the beginning to the end.
In the entropic tests, in which some security steps were removed, the GLM-5.2 model and more powerful models were able to complete the replication process completely. Entropic warns that it will be very difficult to stop such models if they proliferate, as there is no central switch or shutdown point for them. In addition, unlike traditional and unintelligent malware, these systems can identify and analyze unfamiliar devices by themselves and even target data center processors.
The company's main focus in its research has been on IoT devices such as Android TVs, smart home appliances and other Internet-connected devices, as the security of these devices is often considered weak and inadequate. The artificial intelligence giant has warned that if the pace of development of small models continues based on its historical trend, these systems will be able to reproduce fully autonomously by the end of this year.
Also, these autonomous systems are expected to proliferate at a slow rate and rely on available but relatively insecure processing resources; Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to strengthen the systems to prevent the spread of such risks.
