An 8-year-old girl in San Jose died after living in a home infested with cockroaches, with charges filed against her mother and stepfather.

Aurora Williams lived in a San Jose home infested with cockroaches, mold, and pet feces before a fatal asthma attack, leading to child-endangerment charges against her mother and stepfather.

An 8-year-old California girl died after years of living in a filthy home filled with cockroaches, mold and pet feces following a severe asthma attack, prosecutors said.

The Santa Clara County District Attorney's office said this week that the girl's mother, Gabrielle Hanson, 32, and stepfather, Jacob Randolph, 39, knew of the dangerous conditions inside their San Jose home and had been repeatedly warned by medical professionals and social workers about the dangers to their seven children.

Despite warnings, the couple allegedly waited eight hours before seeking medical help when their daughter, Aurora Williams, suffered a serious medical emergency in May.

The prosecutor announced the charges and said: "It was too late."

Aurora was taken to the emergency room by a relative in February 2025, more than a year before her death, after experiencing asthma symptoms, wheezing and trouble breathing, prosecutors said.

A bug fell out of his shoe and a cockroach was seen crawling on him, prompting him to tell staff: "Ugh, bugs just crawl on me."

Hospital staff also reported that Aurora smelled like cat urine, looked seriously underweight and pale, and said she was hungry and not eating.

On May 13, 2026, San Jose police and firefighters responded to a family's home for a medical emergency involving a child.

Another six children, ranging in age from 2 months to 17 years, were placed in supportive care by social workers.

Arora was pronounced dead four days later, according to prosecutors.

The doctor diagnosed Aurora as having died from lack of oxygen to the brain caused by severe asthma and acute lung damage associated with a viral infection. Medical negligence was found to be a contributing factor and her death was ruled a homicide.

Investigators determined that Arora and her siblings had been living in "bad and dangerous conditions" since at least 2019, prosecutors said.

Detectives also found that Aurora's asthma equipment was not properly maintained and that her prescribed inhaler was missing during two home inspections.

Investigators later discovered that a dirty inhaler spacer was missing a rubber seal designed to prevent drug leakage, along with a respirator containing the cockroach.

"Another child has died needlessly in this county, and once again, our prosecutors will do everything within our legal power to hold those responsible accountable," District Attorney Jeff Rosen said in a statement.

"Prosecuting people after this kind of tragedy is necessary — and not enough," Rosen continued. "There are serious questions about how this child and her siblings lived in this dangerous ordeal for so long. In the name of this missing child and others, this community deserves honest answers and real change."

The investigation also led to child sexual abuse charges against Aurora's maternal uncle, Jonathan Hanson, 44, who involved another child in the home.

Prosecutors charged Jonathan Hanson with two counts of molestation and one count of possessing explicit videos of the alleged victim, who was between the ages of 11 and 15 at the time of the alleged crimes.

Gabrielle Hanson, the alleged victim's stepmother, was also charged with knowledge of the abuse and failure to intervene, prosecutors said.

All three accused were tried on Tuesday.

Gabrielle Hanson and Randolph were released on their own supervision over prosecutors' objections, while Jonathan Hanson was ordered held without bail.

Their next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 20 at the Hall of Justice in San Jose.
