Josh Brolin says he became a full-time stock trader after Hollywood gave up on him

Josh Brolin reveals that he spent nearly five years as a full-time stock trader and made more money than he did in 20 years of acting in Hollywood.

Josh Brolin said he wasn't taken seriously until his Oscar-winning 2007 film No Country for Old Men — and in the years leading up to the film, he had a brief stint as a full-time stock trader.

The 58-year-old son of actor James Brolin told Theo Vaughn on the "This Last Weekend" podcast that despite early success in "The Goonies," his career in Hollywood isn't going anywhere.

Before he was cast as Brand in The Goonies, he said he went to "350 auditions" and people told him, "This isn't for you."

Immediately after making "The Goonies", he went to New York to study acting and theater. He said he "took it seriously" and "had been taking it seriously for 22 years because nobody was interested until I actually did 'No Country,' and then 'No Country' kind of changed the s---."

During that period, Brolin said he worked as a landscaper for a year before becoming a stock trader in his 30s, "for about five full-time years."

"I was really good at it," he admitted.

He said he does both swing trades and day trades.

Even after he gained critical acclaim in the industry, money did not destroy him.

He said he was paid $100,000 for "No Country for Old Men," "so I cleared $30,000? That's not considered a good year."

But his Hollywood career took off quickly after that.

While filming "No Country for Old Men," Brolin said he sent in an "American Gangster" audition tape with his 16-year-old son, who plays Denzel Washington.

"And that's the last test I did," he said.

Brolin is now starring in the thriller Whalefall, about a diver who is swallowed by a whale. Brolin plays the main character's estranged father.
