Video game evictions continue. Ubisoft has announced that it will shut down Finnish studio RedLynx, creator of the Trials series, and that there will be significant layoffs at Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced studio, Ubisoft Singapore.

In a statement seen by Eurogamer, Ubisoft said: "Today, we informed our teams of the proposed closure of RedLynx in Finland, subject to the process of local change negotiations, which would affect up to 52 positions. "At Ubisoft Singapore, 70 positions have been affected to align the studio with future production needs. The studio remains an important part of Ubisoft's global production organization."

Ubisoft added: "We deeply value the contribution of both teams and recognize the impact it may have on our colleagues. We are committed to supporting our teams throughout this process and doing it with care and respect."

Ubisoft didn't explain its reasons for shutting down RedLynx, but the studio's last major indie release was 2019's Trials Rising, suggesting it may have taken on a more supportive role since then. Ubisoft has also been undergoing a top-down reorganization of its business, shaking up a number of major franchises under new subsidiary Vantage, while expanding the Ubisoft Massive label to cover more of its brands.

Ubisoft acquired RedLynx in 2011 after the runaway success of Trials HD - a motorcycle platformer with strong puzzle elements. Eurogamer loved Trials HD and I visited RedLynx shortly after release to find out more about the idea. The studio leaders at the time, Tero Virtala and Antti Ilvessuo, have continued to work since then. Virtala notably became CEO of Remedy Entertainment (a post he recently left), and Ilvessuo — creator of Trials — founded new studio Channel 37 to make the watery survival game The Last Caretaker. Anyway, the game seems to have done well in Early Access on Steam and is now approaching a Spring 2027 1.0 release for PC and Xbox.

Responding to today's news, Ilvessuo told Eurogamer: "I'm proud of what we built at RedLynx, but my part in that story ended years ago. In 2012, the Trials Evolution puzzle began, and the final chapter takes place in 2113. So even what we built back then still has a lot of future ahead of it.

"I don't know who - or what - will open that box. But one must be careful enough to carry the key that far. This is what matters. Making something that still has meaning, something that has weight and history in a world that may be completely different in the future. Onward!"

Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced, meanwhile, seems popular. It's sold over 3.5 million in the past fortnight, and a Switch 2 version is reportedly on the way. Dom gave Assassin's Creed: Black Flag Resynced three out of five stars in his review.
