Avatar: Seven Havens features Korra's defenders fighting for their lives
The sequel introduces the last Avatar as a Terminator rather than a hero.
The sequel introduces the last Avatar as a Terminator rather than a hero.
Avatar: Seven Havens, the new Legend of Korra animated sequel, has finally started airing on Paramount+, and the first three episodes woke fans like a sleeper cell activation phrase, with its story centuries later rekindling the not-so-dormant debate between the two sides of the Korra-defender community.
Seven Havens takes place more than 200 years after the end of Legend of Korra, and while the previous avatar, who was able to manipulate all elements, doesn't directly participate in the events of the new show, her legacy lives on in the new avatars (and twin sisters) Pawi and Nisha. Despite Cora's heroics in her show, her legacy in later centuries is that of a destroyer, not a hero. In the Seven Havens, a great disaster occurred that desecrated the world and also divided it into the Seven Havens. This happened during Korra's time as the Avatar, and while the details are sketchy at this point in the show, as much of the records and first-hand knowledge of what happened has been lost to time, history has been written to state that Korra's actions were a major factor in the destruction of the world.
As such, there are scenes of the people of the Seven Shelters actively celebrating Cora's death, either in street performances mocking her, or simply in private glee at her departure. Chances are, this is an Alphabet Trope situation where Cora is framed and used as a scapegoat for publicity purposes, but for now, the show is playing it pretty straight.

Korra has been a divisive figure in some parts of the Avatar community for years, with some viewers upset for juvenile reasons such as having to see a queer woman as the main character in a previously male-led series, while others had more specific gripes about The Legend of Korra's more risque and often darker storylines compared to its predecessor. Series creators Brian Kunitzko and Michael Dante DiMartino say they are aware of the ways in which Cora is divisive among fans, but they also know that Cora may be held up as a queer female protagonist with "different standards" by those who would fill their diapers at the sight of such a thing.
In an interview with Teen Vogue, the pair responded to the notion that this new storyline in Seven Havens was some sort of solution to saying that they also hate Cora, which they laughed off, saying that fans should watch where Seven Havens goes if that's what they think.
We love #AvatarKora in this house!!!! 🚨 Pavy and Nisha will get revenge on him!!👊😡 We had Avatar Franchise creators Michael DiMartino and Brian Kunitzko answer all of our burning questions after watching the first three episodes of AvatarSevenHavens! 🔥
Now, with Seven Havens streaming on Paramount+, Korra's defenders will be in the trenches because her detractors now have new ammunition, and those clips of people saying they're glad she's dead are set to go triple platinum in Avatar spaces in the next few weeks until the show tells viewers what really happened during Cataclysm.
Janet Varney, who voiced Cora in the original series, says she had an emotional reaction to seeing how people treated her character in the first episode.
Seven Havens is only three episodes into its 13-episode season, but Paramount has announced that the series has already been renewed for a third and fourth season.
