Light Material Guide
Because light travels faster through glass than electrical signals travel through copper, it has long been theorized that replacing traditional cables in data centers with fiber-optic equipment could speed up computing and reduce energy consumption. Lightmatter's goal is to make optical networks at scale. Where previous efforts required building arrays of external lasers that had to be connected to processing chips, Lightmatter's guide chips were built with its very large-scale Photonics optical engine. This means that the modules have an unprecedented optical density of more than 50 terabits per second per laser module, but consume only 3.5 watts of power. This summer, the company announced it had joined the Nvidia NVLink Fusion ecosystem, a key endorsement from a company at the center of the AI business.
