What's going on in Spanish drama series and how the sector is doing abroad and at home are some of the points summarized by Gloria Salo of Spanish consultancy GECA on Tuesday during a Mipcom presentation sponsored by Audiovisual Spain. The Spanish Fiction 2026 report, between new fiction and new seasons, covering data from January 1 to June 2026, confirms the strong position of Spanish fiction worldwide – seventh among the top 10 global fiction shows – as well as Hispanic appetite for drama, comedy, popular genres, popular genre crossovers and platform stories. "At a time when Spanish fiction is flourishing both creatively and structurally and reaching out to the rest of the world, it's very important for us to explore new trends," Salo told Variety at the Mip Creative Hub. The data analyst pointed to three factors behind the success of Spanish drama, which saw Spanish premieres grow by 83 percent between 2021 and 2025: risk-taking creators, a willingness to challenge genre boundaries and themes, creative use of strong IPs that have been "reinvented," he said. Four takeaways from GECA research: Popular in diversity

Spain #7 in the top 10 global shows in a highly concentrated market where three countries - the US, Japan and South Korea - accounted for 55% of the 857 fiction shows in the first semester of 2026. Spain ranked seventh with a 5.2% share of the 30 new titles published domestically. The United States ranked first with a 31.8% share of 177 titles. Sustained Hispanic Boom Spanish home premieres increased by 83 percent between 2021 and 2025, from 40 to 73 local fiction shows. Output for H1 2026 remained relatively flat with 30 new titles compared to the same 33 titles in 2025. Most of them the original version (20) and then new chapters (3) and an epic. Hottest Genres In Spain, as elsewhere in the world, dramas – ranging from crime, suspense and fantasy to family drama – were the hottest genre, accounting for half of the period's premieres (15 titles). Titles ranged from Atresplayer's '33 Days', by renowned true-crime investigative journalist Carls Porta and Netflix's mystery thriller 'Oasis', to SkyShowtime's thriller 'The Tribute' ('El homenaje') and Prime Video's thriller 'Day One' about new technological threats.

Comedies and dramas followed with eight and four new releases (26.7 and 13.3 percent of premieres, respectively), followed by miniseries (two or 6.7 percent) and single-title animation. Reflecting egos and diverse narratives, Prime Video's compelling performances in "The Devil" ("Cochinas") was a comedy in which a woman starts a porn business after her husband dies. Disney+ provided comedy through the trailer with Si es martes, es asesinato, Prime Video's Rafael Barcelo and Enrique Pardo comedy Vida Pera, and Movistar Plus+'s comedy-drama I Can Always Play the Best Movie Sometimes. It is worth noting that the report is the value of the reversible potential to maintain production efficiency. In the first half of 2026, about 9 renewals were released in Spain, such as seasons 4-5 of Netflix's "Alfa Males" ("Machos Alfa"). Several new seasons released new stories for familiar characters, such as the latest episode of Netflix's "Berlin y la dama de armiño", the Movistar Plus+ thriller "El Inmortal" and "Marbella: Expediente Judicial". Drama for streaming Proving the broadcasters' leading position for drama content in Spain, 27 of the 30 premieres were launched digitally (90%) and only three on linear TV. SVOD players account for two-thirds of the titles, and a mix of US and leading Spanish broadcasters are most prevalent, with four shows each: Atresmedia's Atresplayer, Movistar Plus+, Netflix and Prime Video.

Basque pubcaster EITB's free VOD service Primeran launched three Telecinco 2 shows, and 10 local and global players, including Disney + HBO Max, premiered just one new title. "The lack of a clear market leader and the limited weight of linear TV indicate a market geared towards on-demand consumption," says the GECA study.
