The Surface Laptop Ultra product page on Microsoft's website shows that the $5,899 version equipped with Nvidia's RTX Spark, 128GB of integrated memory, and a 1TB SSD is no longer available. Cheaper models of this laptop are still available for purchase.
This situation can partially indicate the limitation of the initial inventory of the flagship model; Of course, it is not yet possible to say with certainty that the end of its inventory happened due to high demand, because Microsoft has not released information in this regard. However, the reception of laptops equipped with RTX Spark is not far from expectation; Because these devices are designed for a wider range of professional users and an important part of their appeal is related to CUDA support.
Combining Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) with Nvidia's RTX platform and full CUDA support makes devices like the Surface Laptop Ultra a viable option for developers and manufacturers who already rely on heavy software tools.
Many artificial intelligence frameworks, inference engines, and professional content generation tools are primarily developed or optimized for CUDA. Because of this, buyers can run the software they already use without having to look for workarounds and complicated compatibility.
Of course, competing platforms, such as AMD's Ryzen AI MAX 400, can offer a high integrated memory capacity of up to 192 GB; But few of them can compete with Nvidia's ecosystem in terms of software compatibility.
For professional users, the time spent finding compatible tools or solving software problems may cost more than buying expensive hardware. This issue makes it justifiable to pay a high amount for a device that runs the software required by the user.
Previously, Nvidia's fastest consumer graphics card came with 32GB of video memory (VRAM). But in products equipped with RTX Spark, the memory capacity has reached 128 GB; Integrated memory that is dynamically shared between the central processing unit (CPU) and the graphics processing unit (GPU).
Nvidia claims that the platform can run 120 billion parameter AI models with a context window of up to one million tokens. This capability makes RTX Spark laptops an attractive option for developers, researchers and enterprises that want to run large AI models locally and privately and reduce the ongoing costs of using cloud services.
Since the top-of-the-line Surface Laptop Ultra offers the same 128GB built-in storage capacity, it's understandable why this model is out of stock sooner than other options; However, Microsoft has not yet announced the exact reason for this situation.
Of course, RTX Spark-equipped laptops are not without their downsides. One of their most important limitations is memory bandwidth.
Surface Laptop Ultra memory bandwidth reaches only 273 GB/s. This figure is much less compared to the MacBook Pro equipped with the M5 Max chip. MacBook Pro with the same capacity of 128 GB of integrated memory offers bandwidth up to 614 GB.
This difference can have a significant impact on performance in tasks that depend on faster data transfer.
For example, the laptop version of the RTX 5090 graphics card handily outperforms the M5 Max in the Prompt Processing and Large Language Models (LLM) token generation tests. According to published benchmarks, this graphics card performs up to 133% better in some tests; An advantage attributed to its memory bandwidth of 896 GB/s.
However, the laptop RTX 5090 is limited in running denser models; Because it has only 24 GB of GDDR7 graphics memory. This is where the RTX Spark excels, relying on its 128GB of integrated memory. Besides that, Nvidia's CUDA ecosystem also attracts many users to this platform.
In general, the combination of high memory capacity, software compatibility and support for local implementation of large artificial intelligence models can be the reason why RTX Spark laptops are attractive for professional users; Even if these devices are limited in terms of memory bandwidth compared to some competitors.
I have been writing professionally in the field of technology since 2016, and my main focus is on hardware, digital market and consumer products analysis. During these years, I have tried to move beyond the mere introduction of products, and with an analytical approach, I have examined market trends, brand strategy, and the real value of each product for the Iranian user. My interest in technology is not only limited to technical specifications; For me, every product is a story of engineering decisions, business competition and user experience. From covering news and developments in the industry to compiling buying guides and analyzing daily market prices, I try to provide accurate, up-to-date and practical information so that the audience can make a more informed decision.
