The Director General of the Youth Planning and Social Participation Office stated that the rate of divorce in the country is about 8 per thousand.

According to the report of Ambassador Arjan, Bahman Abdi, director general of youth planning and social participation office of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, while referring to the declining trend of divorce rate in the country, said: "From 1401 to 1404, there has been a 10% decrease in the divorce rate."

Criticizing the publication of some false statistics about divorce, he stated: Sometimes statistics are published that claim that 50% of marriages lead to divorce or that one out of every two marriages leads to divorce, while this conclusion from comparing the number of marriages and divorces registered in a year is incorrect.

Abdi explained: For example, if 430,000 marriages and 200,000 divorces are registered in a year, it cannot be concluded that 50% of marriages have resulted in divorce because the divorces registered in that year are not necessarily related to marriages of the same year.

The director general of the youth planning and social participation office of the Ministry of Sports and Youth stated: To examine the issue of divorce more closely, the married population of the country should be considered. Currently, there are about 23 million married women in the country, and examining the number of divorces in proportion to the population of families can provide a more accurate picture of the situation of this phenomenon.

Referring to the statistics of about 182,000 divorces, he said that this figure should be checked in proportion to the population of the country's families, and based on the mentioned figures, he stated that the divorce ratio is about 8 per thousand and warned against the exaggeration of divorce statistics.

Don't scare young people away from marriage with divorce statistics

Abdi said: Divorce is foreseen in Sharia and law as a solution for some issues, including cases where there are physical and physiological problems or there was deception in the marriage. In such a situation, the law has provided for the possibility of separation.

Emphasizing that divorce statistics should not be reflected in such a way that young people face the fear of divorce from the beginning of their joint life, he added: Such an approach can create a mental obstacle in the way of young people getting married.

50% of divorces in the first 10 years of marriage

The Director General of Youth Planning and Social Partnership Office of the Ministry of Sports and Youth stated: About 50% of divorces that happen in the country are related to marriages that are in the first 10 years of living together. Also, about 5% of divorces registered each year are related to marriages that are in the first year of living together.

He considered part of the divorces in the first year to be related to physiological problems, part to deception in marriage, and another part to incompatibilities.

Changing people's attitudes towards marriage

Abdi, in another part of his speech, referring to the change in people's attitude towards marriage, said: Today, people make decisions based on their own criteria when choosing a spouse, and marriage is done with more knowledge.

He added: "Marriage has gradually moved away from a state that was only influenced by sexual and physiological needs or social and normative pressures, and has become a choice based on individual criteria."
