John Amos' daughter sued brother for wrongful death over actor's death

Shannon Amos K.C. Amos abuses their father while neglecting his medical needs in a plan to gain control of the actor's finances after his death.

John Amos' daughter is suing her brother and people in his circle for elder abuse and wrongful death over their father's death.

The daughter, Shannon Amos, blames her brother, Kelly Christopher Amos, for delaying medical care while isolating the actor from family and friends in the years leading up to his death. The lawsuit seeks a court order that, if granted, prohibits K.C. Amos from inheriting the estate of John Amos and revoking the present will plus unspecified damages.

John Amos, 84, died of natural causes in 2024. For years, his children have been involved in a tough battle over the actor's custody and finances.

This complaint deals with the last years of John Amos' life. Around 2019, K.C. According to the complaint, Amos began keeping her father away from family and friends, manipulating him in various locations while monitoring his communications, making the actor believe that his family and friends were trying to take advantage of him. For a three-month period in 2023, all attempts by John Amos' family to contact the actor were blocked, the lawsuit states. They were told to call K.C. Amos.

According to the complaint, John Amos was left alone on numerous occasions in unsafe and unsanitary conditions, including hotels littered with trash, drug paraphernalia and dirty diapers. Around this time, she was treated for an infection in her legs caused by bugs — one of several hospitalizations, prompting a call from Adult Protective Services. More than caring for her, the archive says.

John Amos' caregiver Elizabeth Bowling wrote in an email to Shannon Amos about the actor's living conditions: "It smelled horrible. There was no clean dish. Mold had started to grow in the sink. Garbage/garbage bags where left. Food was covered on the counters and tables. There is no marijuana and empty bottles of beer and liquor in the refrigerator.

John Amos has missed treatments for prostate cancer and other health issues while continuing to make cameos and low-budget commercial appearances at his son's behest, the lawsuit says. The case was later referred to Adult Protective Services in Colorado, but John Amos was subsequently transferred to Tennessee, where K.C. Amos made a film contract for his father.

In August 2024, John Amos began to show "obvious signs of a serious medical emergency." Despite this, Shannon Amos says her father's caregivers neglected to seek treatment for 13 hours. The actor was later taken to a hospital in Inglewood, where he died four hours after arrival.

Shannon Amos accuses her brother of covering up their father's death, which she found out in October when it was reported in the media. The death was announced by K.C. According to the complaint, Amos allegedly cremated his father without the knowledge of family members.

After John Amosmerg, K.C. The filing states that Amos transferred substantial funds from his father to his personal bank accounts. Shannon Amos claims she later identified herself as the sold-out owner of her father's Step and One Half Productions to ensure control of the actor's name and business interests. He also gained exclusive access to John Amos' monthly and residual SAG-AFTRA pension of about $6,300 while leaving the rest of the family.

This lawsuit challenges the current will. It alleges that John Amos was tricked into signing documents that benefited K.C. Amos at the expense of other family members. Previous version of the will executed in 2020 for the beneficiaries who K.C. Amos didn't think it was appropriate because the document "disappeared" days after he signed it, according to the complaint. Another will was executed a year later to K.C. Amos' power of attorney.

In addition to K.C. Amos, suing Belinda Foster, secretary of Step & One Half Productions, plus three companies formed by K.C. Amost. Two of them list Foster as an administrator. One in Colorado was filed weeks after law enforcement requested John Amos' bank records. The other two groups were formed in California approximately two months before the actor's death. Shannon Amos claims they were used to take over her father's business interests. The lawsuit was filed in August in California state court.

A petition was filed in the trial court seeking an emergency court order to freeze the assets of John Amos. The legal action was later withdrawn.
