Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the rights to Nicky Byrne's "Julia Set" starring Chase Infiniti following the film's world premiere at TIFF.

The film, written and directed by Byrne, was a hit at the festival, thanks in large part to Infiniti's stellar performance. The "One Battle After Another" and "Vows" star earned rave reviews — including on Variety — for her turn as Julia Fisher, a math prodigy who is the youngest and most gifted student in her elite prep course while engaged in an abusive romance with her teaching assistant Pascal (Christopher Briney). Amidst those pressures, the film's synopsis explains, "Julia must find the strength to follow the path she was meant to take." Jason Isaacs and Gillian Anderson also star as Pascal's parents, and Nina Haas, Carmen Ejogo, Chloe Bailey, Nico Hiraga, Liz Lane and Alex Dillard round out the acclaimed cast. Popular in Variety

Byrne said in a statement: "Growing up, I didn't realize people made movies. I thought they were owned by the gods, fell from the sky, and if we were lucky, we got them." For 35 years, all my life, Michael Barker, Tom Bernard and their team at Sony Pictures Classics have made sure audiences see movies worth watching. "I couldn't be more proud to add 'Julia Seth' to their fantastic library, knowing that it will be seen the way movies are meant to be seen: in a dark theater, together."

Sony Pictures Classics, led by Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, will distribute the film in the US, Benelux, Switzerland, Italy, Scandinavia, Spain, UK, Eastern Europe (excluding Poland), Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Israel and Asia (excluding Singapore). This studio plans to release next year.

The Sony Pictures Classics team added: “With themes as wide-ranging as feminism, romantic infatuation, class differences, family conflicts, bullying and love, and even what it means to be a math prodigy, Nicky Byrne's captivating and influential directorial debut makes sense of life in the modern world.

"Seeing the enthusiastic response at TIFF confirms what promises to be a huge theatrical success, and also shows that the much-acclaimed performance of Infinity Chase in 'One Battle After Another' was no fluke," the studio statement continued. "He is at the center of this deeply rich and even entertaining film, supported by an amazing cast."

The deal was negotiated between Sony Pictures Classics and Gersh.
