Seth Rogen Watched Carrie Barker's Next Movie, Says It's 'Even Better Than Obsession'

The "Studio" star gives a glowing review of Barker's upcoming film Anything But Ghosts.

For Obsession writer-director Carrie Barker, delivering a sequel to the year's biggest surprise is a daunting task — especially considering Barker plays the title role.

But Seth Rogen says he's actually seen Barker's sequel, Anything But Ghosts , which comes out next year.

And the studio creator claims that the film is not only better than Obsession, but also Barker's first major feature film break in front of the camera.

Writing for Time magazine's Time 100 package, Rogen described the experience of seeing Obsession for the first time in a theater, then added, "I've seen Carrey's next movie, Anything But Ghosts — and for those of you who are as upset as I am about this much talent in someone so young, I'm only adding to his bad news and damage." He is as good an actor as he is a director."

Anything But Ghosts stars Barker and his producing partner and Obsession co-star Cooper Tomlinson as two fake paranormal investigators hired by a couple (Bryce Dallas Howard and Aaron Paul) who own a real haunted house. The film was written by Barker and Tomlinson and was filmed before the release of Obsession. Like his first hit, Ghosts will be distributed by Focus Features.

During Barker's interview for The Hollywood Reporter's cover story on the director's wild success in June, he was in the middle of editing Ghosts and expressed concern about the film being compared to the relatively high level of Obsession. "If I'm worried, it's hard to compare it to Obsession," he said.

"It's a buddy comedy, but it's still going to be scary and disturbing," he said. When your first movie is breaking box office records and you're in your room editing your next movie, you can't help but feel like, "Oh my god, did I get this beat from Obsession?" Thank goodness I have people around me to ground me and tell me that Anything But Ghosts is good and different, and that's okay. The sound will still be very strong in it."

The budget for Ghosts was $5 million – which is quite lavish compared to Obsession's famous $750,000 budget. Obsession has crossed $500 million worldwide and is in the awards conversation. This film is the fifth highest grossing horror film of all time worldwide. This movie will be released in May 2027.
