Funicular da Grassa, Lisbon's new cable railway system, designed by Atelier Bogio architecture office, has been added to the city's transportation network. This route has two stations and reaches a curved tunnel from Moraria neighborhood, along the garden of an old monastery; where a wide view of the city and the Tagus river is visible.

A route from Moraria to the Tagus river view

The short funicular da Grassa route starts from the dense fabric of the Moraria neighborhood and runs along the garden of an old monastery. The yellow train then reaches a curved tunnel.

Just before entering the tunnel, a wide view of Lisbon and the Tagus River opens before the passengers. This route combines moving in urban slopes with a visual experience of the historical context and natural landscape of the city.

The tradition of funiculars in Haftpeh city

The height difference in Lisbon has been one of the challenges of commuting in the city since the past. Although today escalators also help in some places, the construction of funiculars started in the late 19th century.

The first system was opened in 1884 and the second example, the funicular da Gloria, was put into operation in 1885. For the design of the Da Grassa Funicular, the Atelier Bugio office was particularly inspired by the city's third historic system, the Da Bica Funicular, built in 1892. This project also tries to fit into the historical context of the city.

The condition of historical funiculars after the Da Gloria incident

After the severe accident of the da Gloria funicular in September 2025, the safety and technical reliability of Lisbon's historical systems are more important than before. According to the source text, all of the city's historic funiculars are currently out of service.

Also, the da Gloria funicular is going to be completely renovated and rebuilt. The planned time for restarting this system is 2029.
