When the mid-range Sony Xperia 10 VI was introduced more than two years ago with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chipset and Android 14, Sony promised three major OS updates, including Android 17 this year. However, according to a notice posted on the company's UK support site, the Xperia 10 VI won't be getting Android 17 anyway.
In Sony's announcement, it explains that a "careful technical evaluation" found that "constraints on the device's storage configuration" meant that the Xperia 10 VI "does not support the Android 17 upgrade experience that we consider adequate." As a result, the company has "decided not to make this upgrade available" and apologized that the decision "falls short of our initial announcement."
Sony clarifies that while firmware updates for the Xperia 10 VI are coming to an end, the company will continue to provide four years of security updates that should last until June 2028. It also notes that this particular issue only applies to the "technical specifications of the Xperia 10 VI" and does not affect firmware updates promised for other Xperia models. But since the technical requirements for future versions of Android are still unclear, it's hard to take Sony for granted with today's announcement.
