Hotel Kazakhstan: Golden Crown of Modern Architecture in the Heart of Almaty (+Photos)

Located on Dostyk Avenue, the hotel has served as a venue for business, cultural, and social events for decades alongside its primary function as lodging. Its height, distinctive form, and design suited to seismic conditions have made it one of the best-known examples of modernist architecture from the late Soviet period.

Safir Arjan-Kazakhstan Hotel in Almaty is one of the most prominent modernist architectural buildings in Central Asia. A 102-meter tower with 26 floors that opened in 1977 and became one of the urban symbols of Kazakhstan with its oval shape, vertical facade lines and golden crown. This building was built during the Soviet Union; When Almaty was expanding and the construction of tall buildings gave a new face to the city center.

The design of the hotel is based on an elongated and elliptical volume. The row of protruding windows in the facade of the building gives it a vertical texture, and in the upper part, the golden crown of the building is seen as the most prominent visual element. This combination, along with the significant height of the building, has made the hotel a landmark in the Almaty skyline.

The project was designed in collaboration with architects such as Yuri Ratoshnyi and Leonid Okhobotov, and in its formation, in addition to the visual effect, climatic restrictions and seismic conditions of the city were also important.

Almaty is located in an area with high earthquake risk. For this reason, the design of the hotel structure was done with special attention to seismic resistance. Reinforced concrete core and transverse concrete diaphragms were the main elements of the structural system of the building. In the sources of introduction of this building, the resistance of its design against very strong earthquakes is mentioned as one of the important features of the project.

A building left over from the Soviet era

Hotel Kazakhstan has been one of the main landmarks of Almaty since its opening. This building held the title of the tallest building in the city until 2008, and its golden crown is still one of the recognizable elements in the urban landscape of Almaty.
