As Danny Trejo faces backlash for his involvement in The Daily Wire's latest project, his son is coming to the actor's defense.
This weekend, Gilbert Trejo claimed his father had "never heard of Ben Shapiro" or "what kind of person he is" until two weeks after The Daily Wire and The Grow Shop's "Benfire Legend," described as a fake movie purporting to depict the murder of Renee Goode.
On her Instagram story, shared by The San Fernando Valley Sun, she made a statement: "For anyone watching this crap with my dad..." She was booked for a movie, it's not pro-ICE, it's obviously not pro-nothing. His agent described it as "a complicated story about a complicated time, where everyone looks bad except you, a hard-working Mexican shop owner who just wants to relax."
He thought of playing the role of a good man. About 2 weeks after the shooting, everyone, including us, found out that Ben Shapiro was involved. My 82 year old father has never heard of Ben Shapiro, I had to explain to him who he is and what kind of guy he is. According to the contract, my father can't bad mouth the movie, or walk away without suing for breach of contract. "He couldn't even issue the statement he wanted."
"It's messed up," Gilbert continued. He is handcuffed to this stupid project and a lot of people have turned their backs on him immediately without knowing any of the facts. Ben Shapiro forced the Mexicans to give up one of their heroes and got his name at the top of Google searches and made us look like angry idiots with no difference. He will win."
Last week, Danny Trejo broke his silence after the backlash for his role in the film. "Hey everyone. I want to address some social media comments about me." "Make no mistake," he said. I am a proud Mexican who has always been and will always be a supporter of my community. I am obviously in favor of immigrants. I am not a fan of ICE. I know where I come from and I know our struggles. I am an actor. My job is to tell stories. God bless you, Danny."
Synopsis for Pawn Shop: “When chaos erupts on the streets of Minneapolis, a young federal agent is left alone after his partner is seriously injured and must find a way to survive a dangerous situation. Seeking shelter in a neighborhood pawn shop, he becomes trapped by a traditional Hispanic father and his progressive college-age son, forcing three very different men to confront fear, conflicting beliefs, and a crisis that tests their courage and humanity.
Since filming began, local residents have protested the alleged use of gunfire, fire extinguishers and car wrecks without properly informing residents and businesses, as well as the opening scene, which appears to depict the fatal ICE shooting of Renee Goode in Minnesota in January.
The production of a new ICE-backed Daily Wire film has drawn local protesters in Livingston, Montana. Filming with the working title "Pawn Shop," the latest project from Ben Shapiro's Daily Wire and Dallas Sonnier's Bonfire Legend has upset locals — and not just because it claims... pic.
Production was temporarily halted earlier this month and resumed last Tuesday with a revised film permit, with the crew having to ensure local people have access to the food pantry at the Livingston Food Resource Center and protect people from both violent filming and noise. The production also agreed to address backlash to the use of private security, to ensure there would be no police or harassment of locals on nearby public streets.
Shapiro denounced the suspension as a "violation of the First Amendment" and called the film's critics "censorship freaks" who oppose free speech.
