The book "A critical reading of the novel The face of an artist in his youth" written by David Said, a professor at the University of Liverpool, was released in the market with the translation of Manouchehr Badii.
According to the reporter of Sefir Arjan of Iran (Sefir Arjan), "A critical reading of the novel The Face of an Artist in Youth" written by David Said and translated by Manouchehr Badiei, is a methodical and accurate guide to understand the complex structure of this modernist novel.
This book consists of two main parts, in the first part, the author deals with the historical, cultural, and literary contexts of the formation of James Joyce's novel, and in the next part, he analyzes the text, the character of Stephen Dedalus, and the modernist techniques of the work.
The first part of the book focuses on historical and cultural background and review of critical perspectives. In this section, David Syed first dissected the structural and external background of the novel so that the reader can understand the political and social environment in which this masterpiece was born. Then he reviewed the history of criticism of the work and evaluated what major critics have read of Joyce over many decades.
The second part of the book, which forms the main and detailed core of the work, is dedicated to the critical reading of the novel based on Bakhtin's theory. In this section, the author directly entered the textual layers of Joyce's novel and analyzed the development process of Steven Dedalus's character from childhood to the age of twenty to show how Steven's artistic identity was formed.
In part of the preface of the book, it is stated: "Since people were used to encountering art only in galleries, James tried to get out of the Manus framework and say that the face of all arts has the same criteria. More importantly, considering that Joyce took the title of his novel from the title of The Face of a Lady by Henry James, James's novel explores a concept of individual nature that is somewhat more complicated than the concept that comes from the novel's title.
Madame Merle, who is the most intelligent character in this novel, says the following to the main character of the novel, which is later proved to be correct by the methods of the novel: "There is no such thing as a lonely man or woman; Each of us is made up of a set of attachments. What should we call individual nature? The individual nature overflows to everything that belongs to us and then goes back. Such statements take stability from individual nature and present it as a dynamic principle, which is much less stable than the body or belongings of individual nature.
