Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 – Captain Price's fate explained
Who's alive and who's dead at the end of the Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 campaign? Infinity Ward explains the fate of Captain Price.
Is Captain Price dead? It's a reasonable question to have at the end of Modern Warfare 4's campaign, given how many characters we thought had disappeared have returned over the course of the four games' stories – I've lost count of how many times Graves has returned now. We spoke to developer Infinity Ward to get an answer, and we got one. Well, kind of
In an in-between scene from Mads Mikkelsen's The Archer, a Captain Pryce is seen loading a captive into a truck. An ambush allows Price to break free, but when the vehicle crashes, Archer ends up in the snow as our hero struggles with a metal pipe protruding from his stomach. After stumbling after the villain, Price turns the tables on him and uses said pipe to pierce his throat, leaving the rogue Russian defense minister for dead in the middle of a frozen lake. Ghost then arrives on the scene to share his former teammate's last breaths with him as Price lies still, presumably dead, next to his victim. But does he?
I asked Jeff Negus, Infinity Ward's narrative director, if that was the case. Negus explains: "I will say this. We went out of our way in this game to speed up character deaths, both where they happen and when they happen." And I say that scene is compatible with other scenes.
So, not a yes or no, is it? Numerous characters created in previous series meet their creators in Modern Warfare 4's 16 missions, including Makarov, Gabriella, Graves, and Gaz, to name a few. While we don't see any of them end up in the ground never to get up again, some of them meet pretty definitive ends, with the Gs - Gaz, Graves and Gabriela - all taking bullets to the head. Sir Makarov is now caked on a snowy street in New York, but he looked pretty listless last time we saw him, and given that he was sent away earlier in the story, surely he'd be back by now. Archer needs a reason to go after Price and avenge his son.
If Price actually achieves a goal of "matching others", that surely means he's dead. It feels like the perfect place to end the Modern Warfare reboot saga, and it seems like a real foregone conclusion. But we know things are never that simple in Call of Duty, and I can see why the door might be left open for him to return if needed. If MW4 is well received and proves to be a commercial success, Activision wants to keep things going.
For my money, I'd say he's dead. He's achieved what he set out to do at the start of Modern Warfare 4's story, and even learned a lesson or two about sacrifice along the way. It's the basis of every hero's journey, and it culminates in a glorious sacrifice, eliminating a threat to the Western world in the form of The Archer's evil plan. What do you think? Is Captain Price dead? Let us know in the comments.
