Unique, Stunning and Bizarre Idea: The Most Expensive Stadium in History, With a Ferris Wheel!
FC Zürich's Swiss club unveiled the major project for its dedicated stadium yesterday, a venue with an incredible design.
According to "Sports Three", the most expensive stadium in Switzerland and, according to Bild, the most expensive stadium construction project in the history of football, is going to be built in the Canton of Vallee, which will be surrounded by a roller coaster. The famous president of this club has now explained the details and reasons for this plan.
The new FC Sion stadium is going to be called Cervan Colosseum and its construction costs are estimated at 450 million Swiss francs, equivalent to 500 million euros. The project, which is the most expensive stadium in Swiss sports history, is to be financed entirely through a private real estate scheme.
The owner of the club, Christian Constantin, explained in a conversation with Blake magazine how he will do differently compared to the controversial stadium project of Zurich as the economic hub of Switzerland.
"First, we will continue to play in our current stadium until the Colosseum opens," Constantine said. In Zurich, the Hardtorm Stadium was demolished before the construction permit for the new stadium was issued.
According to him, this made people get used to the absence of the stadium. Constantin continued: "But nothing will change for the people in Sion, on the contrary, we will start the construction of underground parking with all our might, which will remove many open parking spaces, and for this reason, I do not expect any opposition."
If everything goes according to plan, the construction of this project will begin in 2028 and Cervan Colosseum will have a capacity of 21,000 spectators during football matches, making it the fifth largest football stadium in the country. This stadium will even have a capacity of 33,000 people during concerts.
Constantine said: "The construction period will be four years, so our goal is to operate the Colosseum in the 2032-33 season."
The amazing and strange part of this stadium is undoubtedly the roller coaster planned around the stadium. This structure increases costs by about 20 million Swiss francs. Constantine sees this project as an opportunity to create an attraction that, unlike most of Canton Vallee's recreation, is not limited to snow and winter sports.
"I count on 250,000 visitors a year who come for the roller coaster, and when they come here, they will definitely visit the stadium," he said.
FC Sion, currently in third place in the Swiss league table, has been playing at the Stade de Tourbillon in the Rhône Valley since 1968. With a capacity of about 14,000 spectators, this stadium is by far the oldest active stadium in Swiss football.
