According to the description, the as-yet-untitled film is the story of "four brothers and their journey as part of one of the world's first, most successful and influential boy bands throughout all eras and the different paths each of their lives have taken." Popular in Variety
Directed by Benjamin Hirsch ("Janet Jackson"), the film is three years in the making, and tells the story of their "rises, triumphs, breakups and extraordinary reunions" from their beginnings in Gary, Indiana, through their rise to global superstardom. The film also includes Tito Jackson's last interview before his death in 2024.
The film uses observational footage, rare archive footage, unseen material and the memoirs of the four brothers to explore how they were shaped by their father Joe Jackson, whose "uncompromising determination turned the family practice into a relentless training ground". The four remember their initial training as different — the pressure, the competition, the laughter between takes and the sense that even as children, something extraordinary might be happening. They also remember their mother, Catherine, at the heart of the family operation, as they began to venture beyond Gray.
When Mark Pose approached us about working with The Jacksons, it was an instant "yes". "The Jackson 5 is one of the most influential musical acts of all time," said Rick Murray, CEO of Kargerby Group. The film tells the story of the four original members of the original band from their perspective, providing an unprecedented insight into their rise from humble beginnings to global superstardom and their lives to date. We are incredibly grateful to them for their trust and for allowing us to tell their story.”
Director Hirsch added, “Following our work with Janet Jackson, it is a great privilege to have the opportunity to work with the Jackson brothers. "From listening to their amazing untold stories, delving into their rare and often unseen archival footage and retrieving their incredible catalog of hits, this film has been a real joy to put together."
The film is directed by Hirsch, with Simon Stanley as editor, Dorothea Estrian as producer, Sam Newman-Butler as archival producer and Sophie White as production manager. Yessica De Brouwer is an assistant producer, with Murray and Marc Pos serving as executive producers.
"It's a real honor to work with the team at Workerbee. Ben is a true talent and will make a beautiful and compelling documentary. We can't wait for audiences to see this film," said Paper Route Co-Founder Stockory Russell.
"We are delighted to accompany the film on its international journey," added Benjamin Leptit, Vice President of Content, Mediavan Rights. It's a powerful story of family, ambition and music, centered on artists whose influence has resonated across generations and around the world. Unprecedented access to the family archives and the project's ambition make it a definitive documentary about the Jacksons. We look forward to introducing this exceptional documentary to international buyers at MIPCOM.
Banijay Entertainment backed the film by investing in the early stages of development through the Creative Fund.
