"Schitt's Creek" star Dan Levy calls out Shane Gillies' "Saturday Night Live" monologue and says "more men need to stand up to it."
Gillies, who hosted "SNL" over the weekend, drew backlash for his comments about women in his opening. I haven't been to the gym in ages, I didn't know women only dress like whores now? he said "Look, I'm sorry, there's no other way to describe [it]. You've seen it? I've seen it. You've seen the shorts? They're the neon, like fake bait [shorts], and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and they all come together in the hole. And don't let you look! Levy posted an Instagram loop Sunday night reacting to Gillis' monologue in disbelief. "Women wearing short shorts to the gym doesn't make them whores," Levy began. That makes men call them misogynists.” “There's a difference. Incidentally, I've seen more men's nipples in the gym than women flaunting their bodies." Popular in Variety
Levy continued: "But I'm not talking about this happening on live national television. And to be perfectly honest, more men need to stand up to it, because it's complacent that it's created an environment where women are being sexually assaulted and it's a "conversation" as opposed to a "crime."
The Emmy-winning actor and writer, who hosted "SNL" in 2021, stressed that "men need to stand up for women more."
"It's not a women's issue, it's everyone's issue. Because the more men objectify women in the media, the more men see them as objects and treat them as objects. They are superior to men, okay? And if this gets me in trouble with the internet, I'm sorry, but damn you."
Levy received support from many celebrities in the comments, with Elizabeth Banks writing, "Nailed," and Broadway actor Bart Wilbert Wade commenting, "Love you, Dan."
Gillis also dropped the FFK bomb during his hosting on Saturday, a major spoof for live TV. That and his monologue mark the latest development in the comedian's complicated history with "SNL." In 2019, he was hired as a featured player, only to be fired a few days later after airing podcast clips in which he made racist and homophobic comments. He later returned as host in February 2024 and hosted the show for a second time in March 2025, hosting the Saturday episode for the third time.
Representatives for "Saturday Night Live" and Gillis did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment.
