General Motors has unveiled an advanced self-driving military vehicle based on the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD pickup, designed for 2027 military testing and logistics missions.
General Motors Defense, the military branch of General Motors Corporation, unveiled its innovations in the field of military vehicles at the annual AUSA 2026 exhibition. In addition to showing an unmanned military vehicle based on the Chevrolet Silverado platform, the company announced a significant expansion of the infantry tactical vehicle program. These actions indicate the deepening of the use of commercial hardware of General Motors in the military planning of the United States.
Expansion of the General Motors Infantry Tactical Vehicle Program
The Infantry Tactical Vehicle and its heavier version, the ISV-Heavy, take their roots from existing Chevrolet truck platforms. The current ISV model is based on the architecture of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2. The ISV program of the army has increased from the initial order of 649 vehicles to nearly 12 thousand vehicles.
General Motors Defense also self-funded development of a prototype called ISV-Utility, delivering seven prototypes to the military at no cost for evaluation. This five-person version is expected to be used in 39 active brigades and the National Guard after increasing production. Separately, the Army awarded ISV-Heavy prototyping contracts to General Motors Defense, Ford and BC Customs in late June 2026. Each company must deliver three prototypes by March 30, 2027. After that, the Army will conduct operational evaluations to shape the possible purchase of about 606 ISV-Heavy trucks.

Introducing the self-driving military vehicle based on the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD
The unmanned vehicle (UGV) that General Motors Defense showcased at AUSA uses a twin-rear-wheeled skateboard architecture based on the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD. It is designed for drive-by-wire controls, internal and output power supplies, and open interfaces for modular loading. The purpose of this self-driving military vehicle is silent logistics missions and evacuating the wounded, not for use in combat operations.
Released specs for the concept include a 100 kWh rechargeable energy storage system and a maximum load capacity of 8,000 pounds. The self-driving capability of this car is provided by the Gx Ground Agent driving system of Scoot AI. Also on display, the truck was equipped with a LOCUST X3 anti-drone laser weapon and a Squarehead Discovair G2+ drone detection acoustic sensor.
General Motors Defense plans to prepare a demonstration sample of this UGV for use by the military by June 2027. "The modern defense landscape requires advanced capabilities, rapid deployment and sustainable scalability," according to GM Defense President Steve de Mont. This approach is in line with the company's broader effort to convert commercial truck platforms into exportable military hardware.
