EXCLUSIVE: Toronto-based genre specialist Raven Banner Entertainment has acquired the world rights to Polish director Marta Gecko's feature debut Òpi ahead of its international premiere at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival later this month.

Rooted in the ancient beliefs and dark folklore of Poland's ethno-cultural region, the film follows eighteen-year-old Trina as she struggles to escape her suffocating relationship with her mother and a family steeped in tension, buried secrets, and generational trauma.

When Aunt Helena and crippled grandmother Regina arrive, the fragile boundaries between everyday life, ancestral superstitions, and Trina's increasingly disturbing nightmares begin to crumble. Combining psychological drama with raw folk horror steeped in the West Slavic mythology of Kashubia, Òpi explores the violence, repression and horrors passed down from generation to generation. As ancient truths make their way to the surface, Trina must fight to reclaim her voice in a world where the supernatural may be far beyond folklore. Watch on Deadline

The cast includes Viktoria Kruszczynska as Trina, alongside Gabriela Muskala, Magdalena Bucharska, Iwona Bilska and Petri.

The film, which premiered at the 51st Polish Film Festival in Gdynia in September, is already causing a stir in Poland, with its local trailer racking up nearly 400,000 views in less than three weeks.

"Epi is the kind of horror that gets under your skin and stays there," said Michael Past, managing partner of Raven Banner.

"It deals with something ancient and deeply disturbing, using Kashubian Polish folklore to create a world where family trauma, superstition and real horror collide. We're always on the lookout for bold genre films with distinct cultural identity, filmmaker insight and the ability to leave a lasting impression." With previous blockbusters including The Sadness, Deathstalker and Deathgasm 2: Goremageddon, Raven Banner is also at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival with Sundown, Rebecca McKendree's IFC/Shudder horror film starring Olon Faure, Camille Sullivan and Summer Howell.

Raven Banner co-produces and markets the supernatural horror film that premiered at the Locarno Film Festival.

The Brooklyn Horror Film Festival runs from October 15th to 22nd.
