Russell Brand's criminal trial continued in London on Friday, with his co-accused claiming that Brand was a "wild-eyed lunatic" who tried to drag him into the bathroom.
The actor and comedian has been charged with three counts of sexual assault, three counts of sexual assault and one count of statutory rape related to incidents involving six women from 1999 to 2009. He has declared himself innocent and denied all the charges against him. When he arrived at Southwark Crown Court, Brand wore a gray suit, white shirt and gray skinny tie. His wife Laura Gallacher was at his side again after not attending court on Thursday. He told reporters outside court that the trial had been an "extraordinary and stressful situation," according to Sky News. Popular in Variety
"But this is an exploration of truth and justice. As I've said before, I pray for everyone involved," he continued. "It's kind of very, very sad, but hopefully it can have some beneficial results."
On Friday afternoon, the second alleged victim testified in person from behind a blue screen to protect his identity. In the UK, all complainants in sexual assault cases are granted automatic lifetime anonymity if they wish. He said he met the brand while working at MTV in 2001 and praised his T-shirt that read "I am Spartacus" in reference to the 1960 Stanley Kubrick film. According to Sky News, he said it was a "happy, happy joke".
He then asked her where the bathroom was, and she agreed to show him that she was heading that way anyway. She claimed that when they got to the bathroom, "his demeanor changed". She added that he allegedly grabbed her arm "hard" and begged her to "come in, come in, come in." The woman tried to pull away and said at this point Brand had "a wild look in her eyes." When he was released, he called her a "fool" and then she "gave up" and went to the toilet.
After the incident, he questioned how Brand "went from happy and friendly to this wild-eyed maniac," according to Sky News. He went on to tell two co-workers, but not his managers, that Brand, who was hosting several shows for MTV at the time, was a huge "asset" to MTV and that he thought they didn't believe him.
On Thursday, the court heard from the first alleged victim via video interview with police. She detailed an alleged assault by Brand at a Labor Party conference in 1999 after meeting Brand at a cabaret show where he was performing. The woman was then cross-examined again from behind a curtain by Brand's barrister, Ian Winter KC.
The first plaintiff claimed Thursday that after speaking with Brand at the show, he invited him back to his hotel room. He said he thought he was gay with Stawell and felt "sexual security" with him. However, after she went to the bathroom, the plaintiff claims she allegedly stripped Brand partially. He asked her to take nude photos of him - which the court then saw - and then raped her.
She claimed: "I was scared. I remember thinking, 'What have I got myself into' - and then he raped me." She claimed she said no but tried to push him away because he was "really heavy".
"I said no," he said. "I didn't want his dirty cock inside me. I value my body."
The brand trial period is expected to last six weeks.
