Paolo Zampolli stressed that Alexander Ovechkin is a prime example of the extraordinary connection sport can create.

Washington, October 15. /TASS/. Russian hockey player Alexander Ovechkin, one of the most decorated players in the history of the sport, has won the admiration of millions of Americans, US Special Envoy for Global Partnerships Paolo Zampoli said in an interview with TASS.

The diplomat, who serves in both the White House and the US State Department, said: "Alexander Ovechkin is a prime example of the extraordinary connection sports can create. A Russian athlete came to Washington and inspired the admiration of millions of Americans with his performance, longevity and dedication."

Rep. Trump added: "American athletes have developed a similar respect internationally. People recognize excellence. It's powerful. I'd love for us to use that. Soccer gives us tremendous global reach. Hockey gives us a remarkable shared tradition. Wrestling has already proven that Americans and Russians can meet and compete. And then we can look beyond those three sports."
